Well, today at the range I fired my T/C New Englander .50 with some PRB loads. These were my first PRB loads ever, and I had a blast! (no pun intended). I loaded 80 gr. FFg to try first, then went to 90gr. FFg, a piece of brown paper over the powder, then a .490 Hornady RB and Ox-Yoke 0.010" patch. After switching to the 90gr. load, I fired my first shot and saw it smack right on the money where I aimed at 50 yards. I followed with two more and got a 2" group for 3 shots. I was very pleased and surprised with the accuracy. I had only brought a block of 6 PRB and wished I had more! I'm really thinking I outta get back into deer hunting, with this new-found interest.

This muzzleloading thing is fun! :m2c:

Baron, its all about the fun! Get to know your rifle, and the deer don't have a chance!
Our forefathers had no other option than to "bring home the bacon" And you can too.
PS next time take more balls. More balls =more fun=more experience with your rifle

Sounds great...and FWIW in the future...all my TC barrels do best with .018" prelubed pillow ticking patches...enjoy!!

My New Englander thrives on 84 gr FFg and a 0.018" patch w/0.490" ball. Plenty for deer. Mine was a kit and actually has some curl in the wood. :redthumb:

Find yourself a 12 ga barrel for it while they can still be had. It is a "blast" as a grouse & bunny shotgun, too. (And throws a big 'ol punkin ball fairly well.)

I can't for the life of me figure why T/C discontinued it.

PRB's are fun arent they? ::

Try a wonderwad with PRB as well, you might find that you can push them a bit faster and more accuracte.

From the T/C New Englader 50 cal: .490ball, .018 lubed ticking patch, wonderwads = lots of accurate fun!

I got one! I bought mine with both .50 and 12ga. barrel. :)

I found the 0.010" patches tough enough to ram home after the first couple of shots. Will I need a range rod to load with 0.018" patch? Also, what do you guys load over the powder, to seperate the PRB (if anything)?

I've never loaded any kind of wad over the powder when shooting PRB. Thought about it couple times when my patches were burning through but a tighter weave patch always cured the problem for me. Lots of folks do use a wad with good success. Ya gotta 'spearmint an' see whut works best in yore riflegun.

I looooove the PRB(xxxooxxx)! I have killed 4 deer with 50 cal prb and they all were not long in this world. The last one I shot this year was taken right off her feet. Died in her tracks. It's round death for those who venture in her path. I cannot shoot anything else at deer, be ye conicals or centerfire bullets.
