First attempt napping flint.

Bought a brass flint knapping hammer during my recent visit to Dixon Muzzleloader in Kempton PA. Watched a few videos on dressing up a flint while in the lock and other knapping techniques. Tried, it on a dull flint. WELL....all I can say is the this is going to take a lot of beer. (And practice!!)

A large nail filed to a step works very well.

A nail is soft steel and won't make sparks when knapping flint. I use a 16 penny nail and grind or file the point flat. Then you file a step at the now blunt end filed to a step. Functions well. I have also filed a notch in the blade of a turn screw to make a knapping tool.

I’ve found flint to be pretty sedate and it tends to nap well on its own. I’ve found serving them some warm milk first doesn’t hurt, but isn’t needed.

I might be wrong but I think he's dressing the edge of a flint for more/better spark I like pressure knapping or a short notched rod to freshen the edge

Never knapped a flint, my caps don’t need it, but being a person who turned 21 in the 60’s I can tell you that if its’ worth doing, its’ worth doing to excess..... knap away!

My flints nap quite well when they're snug in their little pouch.

I have never even thought of knapping a striker for a flint lock rifle athough I have knapped a slew of arrow heads. A striker should be easier to knap than an arrow head due to its shape,Iwould think?

Knapping is the chipping of flint to form an edge or a tool. Videos on flint knapping can be found on You Tube. Check it out

I’m not a knapper but I have a Friend that is good at arrow heads.
When I ask him if he could knap a gun flint, he said. Sure..... all you gotta do is chip away all the flint that don’t look like a gun flint.....
