Here is my first try at a bag, bought the T.C. Albert book and collected up the necessities and finaly turned one out.

I made up the pattern and put it together, it turned out so cute, its 5" wide by 6" tall, the strap is 5/8" wide, the bag is 3.5-4oz veg tanned cow hide.

This was my tester/trial bag to get the bugs worked out, so glad I did this one first as I found a few bugs.

The stain is the method described in the book and I am pleased with the finished product.

Hope you enjoy the pics

That'll work.
Not really  , gonna use it as a fire start bag as its not big enough for much else.

I'm just finishing up another one that I grew the patern 2" in width so that it could be used as a smoothie bag that is going into a raffel with a Chambers parts set that the Gunmakers Guild that I belong to is putting together.

Wanna buy a ticket :rotf:

It really looks great. It still has enough masculinity to get past the entire "man purse" thing. That is going to be key for me, in order to keep the wife from razzing me.

I'd sure try it on a hunt before moving on to a bigger bag. With nothing more than a few spare balls and patches, and maybe a capper or a spare flint, it will be plenty big. And small, light loads hanging from your shoulder get real addictive when negotiating rough country.

I've become a fan of "day" horns too, horns so small they also fit right inside a small bag like that, yet hold enough powder for about 10 shots. Think horns about the size of half a banana.

That's nice for your first bag. But, I would consider stretching it out on the next one so that the flap is 8" across. Or, you can place your hand in narrowest part the sketch of the 'curved bag" and increase the size to where your hand will fit. The only bag in the Albert's book that is the correct size is his featured bag. All the others seem a little scaled down to me. Many of bags of that time were smaller bags, but not all of them.

The stitching looks fine. You used linen thread, I suppose?

Oh I'll find a good place for the bag, just a tad small for what it was intended for which is a companion piece for a fowler raffle. (I still have to build a shot flask, ball board, powder/shot measure, all of the engraving on the lock and furniture and case harden the lock and trigger. We are doing a complete kit.)

I have the second one finished just need to stain it up is all, ordered up some buckles today for the various bags I now have to build for the wife, kids, parents, etc.

Crawford, like there is anything else or thats what I read anyway.

For mine I am wanting to build the smallish double bag, but I am not convinced on the two partition pieces, the pattern has them wider than the front/back pieces and this looks to be a pain to stich up.

:idunno:

I like the color on that bag.

As far as the patterns go I have just figured to plan for the shrinkage and hope for the best, it is a nice break from some of the other things but don't expect me to make a habit of it, lota darn work involved.

Was doing some work for a regular customer yesterday and mentioned that I was building bags and such and how the cost of leather is just nutz, he mentions that he has some leather thats been in his shop for a bit and I could have it if'n I wanted.

Well I took him up on his offer and this is what he brought in today, all of it fairly heavy, between 6 to 9 ounce except the deer hides.

:shocked2:
