I'm shooting Hornady 0.495 lead ball with a 0.010 oiled patch. 50 grains of FFg gave a very gentle recoil.

Depends a lot too on the kind of shooting one is doing. If punching paper targets only, then 50 grains is fine. If deer are the target, I'd up that charge to at least 70grains.. 2fg or 3fg doesn't matter. 70 grains of either is a good hunting load.

I hunt with a .54 caliber rifle. I shoot a .530 or .535 ball with .020 ish thick ticking patch. I only use 80 grains of 2fg. At 50 yards, I've had complete pass throughs on deer with this load.
 
Thanks for the load advice. It will be used for punching paper and ringing metal. I have not hunted in a very long time.
 
Beautiful gun sir. I built a kibler about a year ago and am now attempting to build one from a plank. It gets addicting.
