I haven't even thought about the lines. I am just trying to learn the little things then when I am done I will look at how everything lines up. Then I won't worry about it so much while I am working.
 
This is one sure way to get finishing oils to penetrate deeply into the grain. I always try to only char them AFTER applying dozens of hours on the stock. Acetylene works if you use lots of oxygen to blow the various holes usually drilled by less experienced gunsmiths. :rotf:
