First crude horn

Just finished my 1st powder horn. Certainly not the same quality of some of the builder here, but you have to start somewhere, and working this horn taught me a lot. It’s airtight, and I will rig up some kind of strap for carrying. It’s pretty “rustic” like me.

IMO, there's nothing crude about it - pretty fine work on the ingrailing, & the strap rings - and I especially like the color.

You can justifiably be proud of your horn - I would think it's giving you a lot of satisfaction.

Looks pretty nice! I personally make do with relatively inexpensive unadorned horns marketed by TOW, Cabella's and others. I did get a rather nice colored one with an odd twist to it from Traditions recently though. I am ashamed to say I put Pyrodex P in it.

I like it. I have a horn and when I get it made into a powder horn it will be much simpler than yours. I have nothing against the scrimshawed horn but I prefer my things to be simple and functional.

For the next horn try Buffalo. It has a fibrous texture you can soften in boiling water and put a round plug into it- not too tight- just to round. On cow horn you need to boil in oil- Fry Daddy, etc. to soften the horn. It is a two step process. You need some tapered "dummy" plugs to put into the horn and then pull them out and put in the final plug. You can get a belled shape if you drive in the dummy too hard.

I agree, it's perty bad alright. The colors are nice though, and the shape is nice too. If you lose it or it gets swiped you can always make another one and it will be better than the first one. Don't beat yourself up too bad. Make another one for a spare. Or maybe even sell it. People will buy anything you know.
