Thanks for sharing the photo and the story of you and your son's first deer. That brings back lots of memories for me and I suspect lots of other folks on here as well. I still remember all the details of that first successful deer hunt with my dad 62 years ago in the Guadalupe Mountains of West Texas. Nothing like it!

View attachment 360968My son drew a muzzleloader mule deer hunt this fall in New Mexico. We were able to find this one on the second day. It’s not real big, but it was a legal shooter. It was his first deer to shoot. Needless to say, he was over the moon excited. Shot it at 25 yards. Shot was a little high, clipped both lungs and his spine. Dropped him instantly though, with a clean pass through.

He used a .50 cal Hawkin I got as a kit about 25 years ago when I was a teenager. This is the first animal the rifle has taken. I’ve taken it out a few times but never saw anything
What a day, huh!!! The hook has been set and black powder and lead got another one! Congratulations to you and your son!

Look, he is shooting a traditional, not an in-line. The beginning of a great life time story. 👏👍

Thank you all for your kind words!

He is definitely hooked on muzzleloading. He has been hooked on outdoors since he was a baby. He also runs traps in the winter and loves it. A true outdoorsman.
