Hey guys, I have been poking around a few black powder forums lately and I've been trying to decide on my first flintlock rifle. I have pretty much narrowed it down to two rifles; the Lyman Trade Rifle and the Lyman Deerstalker. If anyone has any reasons why one is better than the other I would be happy to hear them. So far I am leaning towards the Trade Rifle based merely on the fact that I like the look of it better and it has an extra 4" on the barrel.

First off, welcome to the forum. As for the guns, don't have any first hand experience with the Deerstalker but have heard good things about it. Have had a Trade rifle. They are a good rifle. I just didn't like the single trigger. I prefer the Cabelas Traditional Hawken. It is from the same company that the Trade rifle and Deerstalker are from, Investarms. and has double set triggers which i like. Any of them would be good, but i too prefer the longer barrel on the Trade rifle and Cabelas Hawken.

If you could swing the Lyman Great Plains Rifle, I believe you'd be a lot happier. Midsouth Shooters Supply and Walmart have them at pretty reasonable prices.

I have both the Lyman Deerstalker and the GPR...50 in flint. I would not knock either one, but when I decide to shoot, I reach for the Deerstalker...I've recently made myself shoot the GPR (note "made") as I felt guilty...the Deerstalker is so far from being pc that I'm tempted to take it to a rondy sometime to watch the threadcounters burst into tears, but it is accurate, comfortable to shoot, and a couple of pounds lighter than the GPR...a great woods companion...Hank

I have a Cabela's Hawkin Flint 54 cal that I would sell in the right situation. It lists in the Shooting Book for $339.00 but this one is use and in good condition. Good shooter. Send me an e-mail and we can talk about it.

Alright, first of all thanks for the fast replys guys, the other forums I've been posting on take like two days to get anything back. The prices I'm currently looking at are Trade Rifle: $252.68, Deerstalker: $259.16, or Reconditioned Deerstalker: $220.00. These prices are from www.dnrsports.com and the reconditioned Deerstalker is from Lyman.

Ike, is the Cabela's Hawken you have a traditional one? Because if so thats a beautiful rifle. What kind of price are we talking about here?

Is the Cabela's Hawken a better rifle than the Lymans?

I have both the Cabelas Hawken in .54 cal caplock.
And the Lyman Trade rifle in .50 cal. flintlock.
They are close to being the same gun by the same
Mfg. With the Lyman you'll get a few extras in the
box. Such as, a bottle of Butches Bore Shine, fixed
and adjustable rear sights. I'd say for the money
the Trade rifle would be a good investment.
What ever you choose, just be sure to clean it
good right out of the box before shooting it.

Good luck on your decision.

Correct and it is. Can you contact me off line and we can discuss it? I went to your information and I did not find an e-mail. Click on ike and you will find my e-mail.

If you could find one, you'd be a lot better off with a used T/C Hawken. These others are just T/C knock offs.

I have a trade rifle and I love it, and wouldn't sell it for any price. But I wish I'd bought a GPR.

Yep D&R is located right here in PA. I bought my Lyman Great Plains from Ted at D&R. Great place to do business with and they have some of the lowest prices on Muzzleloaders.

These are far from being just a T/C knock-off. The locks and trigger assy. are made by the same people that make the locks & triggers for T/C (ie Investarms). The barrels have the same twist as the T/C at 1:48 except for the Great Plains at 1:66, but the greater depth of rifling (.012 for Lyman & Investarm - .004 for T/C) is more compatable with patched roundball and will generally out-shoot the T/Cs hands down.
