First Flintlock Squirrel

First squirrel I've shot with my 36 caliber flintlock. To me it was just as exciting as hunting a deer. Heart was racing.

Flintlocks and squirrel are about as fun as it gets.

It's the toughest short range hunting you can do. Target at 25y the size of a golf ball. Post a pic of 3-4 of those laid out in a row and your status goes from Greenhorn to Old Salt just like that as far as I'm concerned.....

My heart was beating like I was drawing on the biggest deer of my life.

I missed one before that guy. That gun shoots better when it's dirty. So I don't know if it was me or the gun that's to blame.

16 gauge... it’s easier too see the sight, since there’s only one!

Ideal in my book is .25-.36 with a very low charge. For some it’s a Smoothbore. A Smoothbore is second by a nose to me. It’s all a blast.

Congratulations on the squirrel. I really like hunting them this time of year with no leaves on the trees. I use my .54 most of the time since I'm deer hunting and going back across my place to the truck I take all of the creek bottoms. Have to hit them in the head or middle to save meat. Sometimes my aim is a little off and I hit the tree but sometimes it blows them off the limb or tree trunk and I try to meet them where they hit the ground in case they try to run. Good shooting and nice rifle.

I noticed the 36 caliber balls were tough to handle and load as my hands got colder, so I don't know if I'd want to go any smaller than that. I have a 28 gauge fowler that I bought off a fellow from this forun and I'd like to use that next time I go out.

That's one reason why I sold my 32 and use a .45 for squirrels. I was forever dropping the balls.
I do wish I still had the .32 though.
I wounded a few squirrels with the .32 The .45 doesn't seem to ever wound them, even a wounding shot is lethal.
