After years of taking deer with a bow and killing MANY trees with a Ml'er I finally connected on a very large doe Thurs. Not a great long tale to tell. This doe was the old herd doe, coming in with her daughter and 2 granddaughters. As I saw her coming from over 200yds away, I was cocked and triggers set, just waiting for the right shot. At 25yds. she stopped to look at me since she figures I didn't look quite right ::. I held the 50cal Beck flinter sights on the white patch of her neck since she was looking straight at me. When I touched the gun off, she dropped where she stood. I don't have lights that go out as fast as she did. This is my story on my first Ml'er deer. Score now, about 6 trees and 1 deer. Deer are much easier to drag out of the woods. Also, though some deer are chewy, they are not nearly as tough as trees. Sugar maples are best if you tag one of them. :imo:

Way to go my man!!!!!!!! I'm sure there will be many more.

PS: I understand that even for a first muzzleloader deer, a shirt-tail cutting is required...OR...as an alternative, you can just UPS that double flinter down here to me and we'll call it even.

Congratulations Dave. Glad to hear ya finally got your first BP deer and started leaving all then Endangered trees alone. :: That deer may be easier to drag out of the woods, and may taste better than those trees ya been killin', but they don't work worth a hoot in the woodstove. Way to go.

Congratulations! All these blackpowder deer stories are making me think I should take up deer hunting again. It seems like a perfect fit for my new found obsession with smokepoles!

Geez Dave, when you sent me the pic of you with all the birds (doves if I recall) I thought you "didn't look quite right" either ::. If we meet in person, I must remember not to look at you in that way ::. Congrats bud, how about a pic?

Cody, I will send pictures when I get them out of the camera. I need to move into the new world and go digital!

Yes bear1st, this is the 50 Beck you built for me in 2001. I had to train her for awhile to stop hittin trees! May have to check the iron content on my ball to see if the ball is magnatized to the trees. I have really put some good shots on some of them sneaky ones. They are quick and can get in front of a balls path faster than lubed lightening! :results:

Has it been that long? hummmmmmm I took that rifle out and test fired it with a mark on a tree, Man I guess I shouldn't have done that :nono: Do you think I can get away with telling that warden that I am training the smokepole  :what: what it should shot at? :shake: I guess that wouldn't work to good. Will any way glad you made meat and now that you put ye ol foot down and let that rifle know who is boss you should make meat many times over.

You certainly can't fault the gun for shooting the trees! Has to be "operator error". I have 10lbs. of meat soaking, so jerky will be made, starting tonight. :redthumb:

OHHHHHH Yummmmmmmm yummmmmmmmm I love that kind of food I hand to make mine out of a young calf and not elk or deer  but next year I hope. Am starting on Debs rifle soon so maby she can make meat :applause:
