Nice! BTW, I recently picked up at auction, a beautiful Plain horn, no engraving, apparently very old. Only about 20 bucks! BUT, it had some kind of modern red marker scribbled on a part of it, like a child might do. In removing the marking with some spray cleaner, a coat of "patina" came off, leaving a nice un-polished surface. Then, the Screw Off tip, that allows a larger diameter to fill, was obviously done with modern taps! Anyway, it's 13" along the curve, has impeccable aged wood plug and staples, and is a real looker. But, for only 20 bucks at auction, my initial disappointment gave way to satisfaction for an item well bought.

Very nice. Just made my first one too, and after seeing yours I'll just throw mine in the corner of my gunroom🤣. I was happy I could just get my initials etched in.

So the other day at the hawken classic I was able to pick up a couple polished horns. Figured for 15 a hour you can’t go wrong even if you do! So here is my first attempt at a powder horn. Still not finished but wanted to share. Body needs a final dye and age final plug fit and the staples attached using two staples front and back. I thought that this was a cool horn because you can use it right or left handed. Any thoughts or critiques are welcome!
Nice horn Mike!

Without a doubt that’s one of the finest first attempts I’ve seen. The engrailing and throat area is fantastic! You’ve taken your time, thought it out and it shows!

Well here is an update it is getting closer. I have aged/antiqued the horn and the rear plug is fit. I plan on doing something else on the rear plug some relief carving or something not sure yet.
Also would wampum be inappropriate for a horn of this time period, is that a F&I war thing or could you have seen wampum used in rev war periods? My second thought would be a simple leather strap? Thoughts.

So, what did you use for your antique finish? That really really makes that pop! That looks like a real antique my freind!

So, I used Aneline die. Then after those I went up to the garage and found an old can of Jacobean stain. Threw some of that over top and sprinkled with a bunch of dirt and sawdust. Let dry. Today I rubbed back some of the tacky stain and fit a staple for the strap as well as a lead button on the base plug. I think I will now call her done! Here are some photos of the finished horn. I feel that rubbing back the stain reveals more of the scrimshaw. Now I’m on the hunt for a strap. Would wampum be inappropriate? Or would a traditional woven or leather strap be more fitting?
