First Muzzleloading Kit Build Thread

Wow, Ive made a lot of progress since my last post! Sorry for not recording my progress as much as I did, I was having too much fun with the build! Anyway, I browned the barrel and stained the stock. I’m planning on aging the buttplate and patchbox and I’ve already aged the trigger guard and barrel wedge thingys (sorry forgot what they were called lol). I’ve put around 20-30 hours on it so far and now I have to put Tru-oil on the stock and do some finishing work.

I used Birchwood Casey Walnut and Birchwood Casey Rusty Walnut. I applied 4 coats of walnut, letting the coats dry completely before applying another. I then added 2 coats of Rusty Walnut and let the stock dry. It’s a little darker and a little redder IRL than in the picture.

Hey y’all. I have completed the build and honestly, I think it turned out really good! For my finish, I used 4 coats of Tru-oil and I knocked down the shine to what I wanted. Overall this project has been extremely fun and rewarding. I’ll be shooting it this Saturday and I’ll give you all an update. In the end, this project took me around 2-3 weeks.

That is a fun build. I really enjoyed following you on your journey as you completed this project. The insight that others provided, very nice. I love this community, such a great place to spend my time. Congratulations, you did a good job…next step…how does it shoot?

My final semester as a teacher has now come to an end. It was a great career and I will truly, deeply, miss it. As a gift to myself, I’m going to be starting my own project…I’ll be building a .50 calibre CVA Mountain Rifle. This is a kit that I bought around 20 yrs ago, when I first started teaching. My very first muzzleloader, was a .50 calibre Mountain Rifle that I bought with my allowance money, when I was ~13 years old. I’ve long since retired that rifle, and I’m looking forward to building one of these fine firearms.

I’m really looking forward to putting this gun together. I just hope she’s a shooter when she’s done.

Well, the gun performed great. I dry balled it a couple times but other than that it worked fine. When I got home and started cleaning I noticed that the stock was all out of wack. I noticed some cracking and bulging from the wood. I was devestated. I don’t know what could have caused this, other than I got some water on the stock while cleaning (although it was on for like 45 seconds to a minute max). I think I got a faulty piece of wood because the way it cracked and how the tolerances changed are inexplicable to me. I’ll try to fix my issues but I think I’ll have to get a replacement stock.

That’s one nasty crack! I’m confident that it is not from your work or from a bit of wash water.

Looks like bad wood or bad factory inletting.

That can be fixed and it wont crack anymore. If you want to pm me I might be able to help.
