A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to take my first with a patched roundball. It's been something i've been after for a few years. I drew a special muzzleloading hunt here in Missouri. I was sitting on a wooded hillside overlooking a creek bottom when a nice 6 pt. came down the hill to the left of me and stopped broadside at 20 yds. I hit the set trigger, settled the front site of my Lyman 54 cal. behind his shoulder and touched it off. He ran 25 yds down the hillside and piled up. It was a perfect ending to a great November day in the woods. I've got the itch to try it with a flintlock next year. I just have to decide if I want a rifle or a smoothbore.

congratulations.
I guess that you realize that it is addicting.

Just consider MLF as the AA for blackpowder addicts :haha:

Congrats, blackpowder deer are special. :applause:

If you are getting a flinter, personally, I would opt for the smoothbore

Congratulations. Sounds as if that roundball did a job on him. Any pics??

ATTABOY! Congrats! very special! RC oh yeah...flintlock...SMOOTHBORE a very versatile weapon!

Not really. There is no cure. This is kinda like a methadone program, managing your addiction. :haha:
We've found that without such support this disease can be fatal. Why just the other day my wife said she would kill me if brought another smokepole in the house. :rotf:

congrats on your deer. good luck deciding on a flintlock rifle or a flintlock smoothbore. guess it all depends on what you are planning to do with the gun? target shooting probably a rifle, for all around hunting and target shooting, smoothbore. gotta love them smoothbores. I would get the smoothbore, you have a fine rifle allready. flinch

The more I think about it and listen to you guys the more I think I'll go for the smoothbore. I like to hunt more than I like to target shoot. With the smoothbore I can Squirrel & Fall Turkey hunt as well as Deer Hunt. I read somewhere on the forum about Jackie Brown Smoothbores, and was looking at his Carolina Smoothbore What do you guys think. It's at the top end of what I can pay but I know they get alot more expensive then that. In fact I think that its about as cheap a price as i've seen in the little bit i've looked. What kind of range are we talking about with one of these loaded for turkey and Squirrel. I figure 50 to 60 yds with a round ball for Deer. Any advice would be a great help. Still alittle nervous about the Flintlock since there new to me. Thanks

I have one of the Jackie Brown Carolina smoothbores in .20 ga. I really like it. I average over 100 shots per flint with the large Siler lock and it is very accurate with rd balls. I have also taken two turkeys with it with shot. Very fast lock time too. Great gun.
