The variable for most differences in diameter is alloy, so both cavities should throw balls the same diameter, no matter what you use as lead. That leaves sorting by weight.

So, my answer to your last question, is, Yes, provided that in sorting by weight you also remove any balls with wrinkles, or other obvious imperfections. Even the wrinkled balls shoot fine at the shorter ranges, so don't throw them away. Just save them for short range work.
 
Fill your pot with lead and get it up to temp. Take your spoon and scrape the inside walls of the pot while it is full and hot. The problem material will get scraped off and you can flux it out of the mix.
