If you intend to stretch out the useful distance and flatten the trajectory for hunting then select the amount of powder you want to use and then develop your load to be accurate with that amount of powder. That's the opposite of how most people go about load development but it's the way to go for "hunting loads".
 
Congratulations for getting your big doe! Way to go! We have seen no bears around here since the spring. Saw a nice buck two evenings ago, broadside at 15 yards, but it's not the late season and I am not 65 years old. No does seen. Hot weather has most of the animals bedded down until dark. I also don't hunt after dark, so I will have to forego getting a deer in early muzzleloader this year.

Thanks, NK. For whatever reason, the gun stopped performing well at 100 grains. It used to perform very well at that power level. I don't know why it changed, and I tried to figure out why every which way, unsatisfactorily. At 80-85 grains FFG it is back to being consistently dead-on at 75 yards, and so I figure that is about as good as it is going to get. And for a .54 caliber, that is pretty good.
