Riverrat, I think that 25 yards is 75 feet or 900 inches. Other than that, the math was good, better than I used to get in high school.

Yawl quit that. It's the weekend and I ain't working.

I don't know about all that fancy figuring,I always put a pencil mark along the top edge of the front sight and then file the mark off and reshoot.
The way to go is file alitle and shoot alot. The milk jug trick is a good idea!

I've been doing this very thing today, having finally bought a good gun vise and built a rock-solid bench for it! I shot over 200 rounds from my new rifle before I started to think about filing, because I felt I needed to shoot it in, become confident with the mechanics (being new to flinters) and get the right ball-patch-load combo. Mine was shooting low too but I just concentrated on the grouping, and now that I'm satisfied with that I'm filing after each five rounds and watching the group slowly rise up the target.
I settled on 50 gr 3F, 440 ball with 015 patch for my 45 cal, so maybe you would need a bigger load as someone above suggested. Also I'm zeroing at 50 yds.

Hello Big John, I also have a Yorktown rifle that Brad built for me. It's a .54 and loves 70 grains of Goex ff. I cut the patches at the bore and use Bore Butter, but mixed me up some of Stumpy's Moose Snot to try. The more you shoot your rifle , the more you're gonna like it. Good shooting.....Allen

Hey Magnumz
Brad does great work, i already love this rifle. I spent aug.-sept. shooting my percussion for the N.R.A. Qualification muzzleloading course, now i want to tune up the flinter. When i allow for the sight, it shoots unbeliveably good. Catch ya later. :imo:

Superflint,
I tried you milk jug trick today, that is a great idea, sure wish I had thought of that. Thanks for the tip!

I sighted in my flintlock rifle today. I had to file alot off my front sight. The front sight is only 3/32's after sighting it in. It is still about 1/2 of a inch low. Is there any thing else I could do? I have a 45 cal shooting 50 grains of 3f. I tried shooting 60 grains but really did not have an effect. Does any one know why I had to file so much off the front sight. Is it something I did when I built it? Any help will be appreiciated. thanks

Did you check the barrel for run out before you mounted it?
The run out could be in the wrong position.

No. I'm not sure what that is. I fallowed the book the art to building a peselvania long rifle. It did not mention it.

Look at page 24 of The art of building a pennsylvania longrifle. it will tell you about it there.

I did read that when building it, I could not tell by looking at the barrel. Nor did I understand what they where talking about by the picture. I have a greenmountain barrel wich looked perfectly striaght, so I did not worry about it. That may be my problem. Will this effect accuracy or cause any other problems down the road? I have it pretty good as far as sighted in, it just looks funny with the front sight barely being there and could cause problems if I had to do some final filling to make it perfect.
Thanks

I wouldn't worry about down the road at this stage of the game now. just get it sighted in good and go with that. if you have a problem later then it can be addressed IMO.
