Flash pan powder holder

Some where I have seen a brass powder holder for the flash pan. I believe you press the tip in the flash pan and it puts the proper amount of powder in the pan. One of brass or a real small powder horn with the right tip on it would be great if I could find one.

I got mine from my local M/L dealer and it works great!!! Leaves about 2 gr of 4f just by pushing the tip of it down in the pan. The name of the company is Muzzleloaders and more and they are on the web. FRJ

Does the Mid-way dispenser throw 3Fg powder? I contacted TOW and they said the PP-4 would be better for 3fg - the throat is a little larger than the PP-3. But both are best for 4fg. Can anyone comment from first hand experience?

Don't know. :idunno: Haven't tried it with fffg.

For $2 more I would go with what TOW recommends.

Or for $12.99 look at their Flask-PP-FF. The valve is free flow and looks like a sturdier design than the other two.

Actually, the one I have throws 4 gr. I don't think any of the dispensers are set up to throw 3Fg. The hole in the valve would have to be increased.

The small brass pan primers throw 3rgns.
It's a standard size set of hardware that can also be bought to use in antler, small horn, etc.
(The larger size brass pan primer dispenses 4-5grns)

There are two of these valves offered. One grain and three grain. The one grain model is pretty useless, IMHO. The three grain is far and away the most popular. I'll grant they may not be the most precisely made things in the world so I won't doubt your four grain claim. Very possible.
Unlikely they would work well with 3Fg, I use only 4Fg for my priming.
The valves can be purchased separately. It is not hard to make yer own unique primer. I have made many to give away, trade and even sell. (Mods, not selling any currently :shake: )

In addition to "The Possible Shop" at the top of the MLF, Track of the Wolf also carries the brass pan primers with 3 and 4 grain dispensers:
I have them both...the smaller one holds 90grns of 4F but I have to refill it partway through a range session as I use 120grns 4F per session. The larger one holds 150grns 4F which covers the whole session.

To get the 3 grain charge that I like, out of the larger 4grn dispenser, I use a thin cut-off wheel in a Dremel tool to trim the length of the 4grn plunger back shorter.

I use to have two brass pan primers, one was small and threw 2-3 grains 4F. It was my favorite though as rb experienced it wouldn't quite get me through a range session. I lost it in the woods last season and miss it sorely. The other is larger and throws easily 4-5 grns of 4F.

A gentleman from another forum kindly gifted me with a primer made from a deer leg bone. It is beautifully made and works just as intended though it's not spring dispensing. This is the one I'll have with me in the woods this fall.

Beware that they are like holding a hand grenade in your hand if spark happens to be sent errantly.

An owner of a well respected muzzleloading supply house has a hand that is disfigured from one of those brass priming flasks exploding in his hand a few years ago. I use one and am always aware of this. They really need a "Weak wall" of sorts. Sort of like a blow out plug that might releive the pressure of an ignition. Mayby drill the back and put a cork in it. That might leave one with scars and most of his fingers if it gets accidentally ignited.
