I have been slowly swapping out my pre made gear with stuff that I have made, and its time to replace my powder horn. My question is were flat horns ever used for the main powder horn rather than the priming horn, I prime from my powder horn and don't carry a primming horn. I try to keep my stuff in a pre rev. war style, would a flat horn be PC for this time period (1750s-1760s)? I know there is a few good books out there, but I have already blown my book allowance and my wife would have kittens if I bought another (for at least a few weeks anyway). I do have the buck skinning book that has instructions on making a flat horn. Any thoughts other then my own would be a great help! ::

There's nothing wrong with using a flat horn as your main powder horn. Many opt to do this more for hunting due to being able to downsize their pouch. I also prime from my main horn.

yes flat horns were used for the main horn. and yes again to the question if flat horns are p/c for the 18th century and actually even before that i believe.
a great reference book for building a flat horn and a little history as well would be the buckskinning book VI with and article by mark odle . good luck in your pursuit.

Thanks for the Info, I have the veary same buckskiner, with a nice picture of a york Co. flat horn from the 18th. cen. DUH ::,

Flat horns were well known in 18th century Scotland and probably before and it's not inconceivable for the flat horn to have come to America in the 18th and 19th centuries.particularly in the South.
