It was 7 degrees this morning and every step I took in the snow sounded like an elephant. I waited around for it to warm up so I could move a little quieter.
I came up on 4 deer browsing in some brush at about 50 yards. They caught me in the open so it was going to be a off hand shot. (I hate those) My wife had given me orders to take a small deer if I could so I picked out one of the smaller ones. I only had a head or neck shot because of the brush and I didn't trust myself for a try at a head shot so I settled the sights on the neck and lit the fire.
The ball took out the spine and just broke the skin on the off side. I was shooting 60 grns. of Goex 3f, .400 97 grn cast ball and .18 pillowticking patches. It's the first deer I've taken with this rifle. It's a little feller but I'm all kinda tickled with this one. I built this rifle and it's my first flint.
I was going to post a pic. but I can't seem to figure it out. I'm not real sharp on the ole puter.
Thanks for letting me rattle.

Thanks Fellers. I'm going to try this pic thing again.

Well that didn't work!

Congrats on the deer RL! :RO: I see you are having trouble with attaching a picture as well, if you figure it out share it with me please. I'm stumped. ::

ROCKLOCK,
I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL. THIS ONE WAS SPECIAL WASNT IT. I WAS OUT IN "WV" YESTERDAY ALSO. AND LIKE YOU MY LITTLE FLINTER MADE MY HANDS "RED". OUT OF SEVEN HUNTERS I HAD THE ONLY NON INLINE. I HEARD THE USUAL JOKES IN THE MORNING BUT IN THE AFTERNOON A COUPLE OF THE GUYS WERE BEGGING TO SHOOT MY LITTLE DEER SLAYER. I USED A 45 FLINT BUILT BY MARVIN WOTRING OF MORGANTOWN. THIS RIFLE SHOOTS GREAT AND HAS TAKEN LOTS OF DEER, SOME TURKEY GOBBLERS, AND A BUNCH OF SQUIRRELS.
CONGRATULATIONS, I KNOW YOU HAVE EARNED IT.

I love the forty and am still amazed by what it can do. I do not understand all those that are against using it for deer and hogs. They should study the bore size of most of the longhunters on the early frontier.

Rocklock,
very nice----congrats!!!!!! :master:
snake-eyes :RO: :peace: :)

way ta go congrats on your deer....hope i'll be making some jerky later this year.....................bob

This is my first deer with a 40. I passed on two different shots early this week that I didn't like. The 40 may have got er done but I wasn't comfortable with the looks of it.
I have now doubt that a 40 will take a deer cleanly but I'm not sure of it's limits yet. I hope to have another chance in the morning. It's our last day of season and I have one more tag left!

My forty has killed about 20 exotic cull does and a boatload of feral pigs. If I do my job it does just what it was made to do.

Congrats WV Rocklock,

I got 2 deer this year with mine so far still got 3 days of anterless to go.

I love a good rocklock! :redthumb:

Good going on the 2 deer. I had forgotten about the 3 day antlerless at the end of the month. My brother reminded me last nite. I have one tag left. Guess I'll give the 40 another try.
3 WV hillbillys on here that I know of. This is a good sight with good folks on it. Don't know why I waited so long to join! Good luck on the last 3 days.
