This evening found me watching a super deep hollow for an unsuspecting doe.

Within a couple hours, I heard the leaves crunching in that particular rhythm that makes a hunter take notice.

She slowly picked her way to a position downhill of me, dawdling her way to a picked soybean field.

Feeding on beech nuts, I watched for a good angle for ten minutes or more.
I finally liked what I saw and my flintlock rifled gun barked.

She fled the way she’d come from and I could hear the end of her race as the woods were calm this evening.

A good friend volunteered to help get her out of the timber in the dark. It’s sure nice to have good friends. That said, I’d helped him with a twelve point buck a few days ago....

She’s a beautiful doe and I feel blessed to have spent time in her woods with her.

Apologies for the pickup truck picture. Circumstances made “in the field” pictures impossible.

Best of luck to you all and stay safe!

Best regards, Skychief.

Congratulations, Skychief. You did it better than I did. I had a nice doe outsmart me completely yesterday. She came in on my blind side and left in a hurry when I decided to stand up for a break. Their alarm cough/blow is surprisingly loud when they are up close. A nice picture for your file.

Thanks for the replies all.

Eric, I'm looking forward to the many good meals and snacks she'll provide! Good luck.

Spence, yes, those nearby and unexpected snorts are alarming to say the least! I don't know about most, but I invariably and involuntarily, give half of a negative headshake whenever an old longnose sounds off.:)

I'm of the opinion that an older doe is one of the wisest, most paranoid creatures treading this little marble. Most that have hunted long might vouch for that. They are on edge nearly all the time and make bucks look like village idiots, at least a few weeks out of the year.

It pleases me to know that you've been afield, more than you would understand.

Thank you for dropping in.

Best of luck, Skychief.

PS, I may like a copy of that file sometime if not too much trouble Spence.

That's a nice Doe skychief. I'll be hunting this weekend in Kentucky with my Kibler .45 SMR. Very encouraging to see your success!
