Keep your flints dry, no oil, no water. Both will affect sparking ability. I periodically wipe my flints with alcohol while shooting.
But not while drinking.

I use moose milk all the time. After I Ioad, I wipe the frizzen and flint with my oily finger. Never have misfires from that.

The reason I wipe the flint and frizzen and pan periodically with alcohol is due to the crushing humidity we have here in warm/hot weather. In dry air conditions I don't find it to be a problem.

i keep a bottle of 91% isopropyl on my cleaning bench, one on my shooting bench, and a small one in my possibles bag. not for oil but for fouling.
i really need to dig out my knapping books. one has a study done by Stamford i think it was. they aged native artifacts( points of obsidian and chert, etc.) by measuring the depth of h20 penetration on a molecular level. 1 atom penetration =500 years etc.
i would feel safe saying that oil, water, etc. isn't going to alter the material.
the flint in your cock could be dripping oil, and if sharp, strikes the frisson face at the correct orientation, the frisson is tuned correctly, it will cause the shaving of white hot steel, creating the shower of sparks we all crave!

They migrate to higher ground in the summer to avoid heat and flood waters then migrate back to the lower ground in winter to survive the cold! You can see their tracks in the sand as family groups move around.
