O.K. I'm planning a bear hunt in late summer. Going to try and sneak up on 'em while they're feeding in the berry bushes along the crick. The plan is to bust one with my flintlock. The kicker is it will a) most likely be very hot b) getting to the crick requires covering about two miles of terrain that is a lot more "vertical" than I'd like and c) I ain't getting any younger.
To lighten the load I want to cut down on my normal deer hunting gear and take only the essentials. Question is what is essential? I'm talking stuff strictly to keep the rifle functioning, not things like "water, lunch, knife" etc..
So what would you consider the minimum "possibles" I should haul along for hunting bear with my flintlock. I figure I'll carry 6 of those preloaded plastic tubes for ammo (not PC but very light and convenient), 3 extra flints and leather(one to lose, one to drop into the creek and one to actually get into the cock), a pan primer (good for 20 shots), vent pick, patch worm, and ball starter. All this will go in a small belt pouch. Am I missing anything??

I think i would take a large knofe and a tomahawk just in case that first shot don't stop mr. bruin and he comes yer way. :m2c:

you need a knife for skinin and a rope for draggin. dont forget even a little bear gets big after a hour of dragging . a big um becomes a giant in about 10 min .

I believe you forgot the young whippersnapper to be gun bearer and bear hauler.

I'm not going alone. While the individual in question is obviously stupid enough to go along with me he ain't THAT stupid. He also ain't that young. Come to think of it, he don't smell too good, either.

2or3 balls should be plenty, you probably won't get a secon shot. Even when hit they usually don't go toward the shot they hi-tail it. I reccomend a double lung shot or one behind the ear.Listen for the death moan it will raise your hackles the first time.
To get a shot you must be very quiet and scent killers are a must.
Hunting without bait, you must be careful not to shoot a mother with cubs nearby.
Cornfields are great places to find bear before and just after the last cutting. Good Luck!

N.W. My advice is to get a good quality backpack.quarter him up .If your not making a rug leave the head with the gut pile. and find two good freinds to share the walk out with. that's what I did last fall he went 300 and change.A rug is real nice, something that you'll love for a life time and your wife will talerate for a month.(buddy has three in the attic),oh by the way the head and hide was near 80-100lbs....and i'll do it all again next year given the chance . good luck.
