I want to order some good reads for the winter daydreaming season... What are some good books to help me learn more about the flintlock... I love anything from 'how tos' ta history.

Flintlocks - A Practical Guide for their Use and Appreciation by Eric Bye. You can get this book on Amazon.com

Eric Bye was the editor for Muzzle Blasts the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association monthly magazine for years.

You won't find a better book on the care and feeding of a traditional muzzleloader than his book. I have shot against him many times and he is a tough competitor. Some of my friends are pictured on the cover of the book.

The illustrated books sold by TOW like "A Solider Like Way" and "All Sorts Provincials" are great educational reads as well as having OUTSTANDING photography!

Don't overlook Mark Baker's 'pilgrim' series where all his coluns were reprinted in book form.

Just ordered the Eric Bye book. Thanks for mentioning it. It will go along with my copies of Mark Baker's Pilgrims books and Ned Roberts classic. Can't have too many black powder books when the snow and ice keep me in my reading chair. :thumbsup:

In addition to Mr. Bye's book, a fun read about the folks that use the flintlock rifle is The Hunters of Kentucky by Ted Franklin Beleau. Sorta break up the technical stuff with some adventure stuff...doesn't get dull that way, eh? :grin:

Eric Bye's book arrived late yesterday. I thought the price was rather high for a paperback but the pages are high quality heavy stock and the print and photos are excellent. Just thumbing through it this may be the most comprehensive volume on flintlocks and the many practical and fun aspects of using them I've seen. Besides, Bye starts his section on safety by quoting Mark Twain on the deadliness of 'unloaded' firearms. A sure way to win my heart.

This looks to be a book that calls for a cup of strong black tea (madeira wine or Wild Turkey 101 might make an appearance), a bowlful of Virginia tobacco and a couple of hours in a comfortable chair. :grin:

One fellow left a poor review because he bought the Kindle version (rather than the bound book)and thought the photos were too small to be of use. That may be a valid criticism, but it doesn't apply to the physical book, so I would love to offset his review with many positive ones. FYI, I bought the hardcopy book through Amazon Prime but right now Amazon doesn't list it except through third party sellers at very high prices. I assume the hardcopy edition is still in print. They still offer the Kindle version.
