If you did want to still hunt with it, you could use Nice Shot, which is almost as soft as lead, and far softer than steel.

Have never heard of Nice Shot unless we have a different name for it here in the UK .There was a type of shot with using tin mixed with another metal but have never heard of it for a while has I have always used lead for fowling until the ban

www.niceshotinc.com of 9970 Barbey Road, Albion, Pennsylvania is the maker and seller. It's mostly available as loaded ammo in all the current shotgun gauges but bulk shot is available in one pound bottles at $39.60 per. Currently they list #6 and #7,5 shot available but loaded ammo is also available in #4 and #2 shot size. You can contact them for available sizes. Nice Shot is Brinell hardness 14~16 compared to Brinell 286 for most alloyed shot available. Lead is Brinell 5. They do mention discont for multiple bottles but not actual price, which probably varies according to amount. Bismuth, Tungsten Matrix, Tungsten-Iron and Hevi Shot (10% heavier than lead and made of tungsten, nickle and iron and priced accordingly) are mostly available. Looks like Nice Shot may be the leader in the field.

I shoot what works, and in my .62 fowler using two OS cards over 76gr 3f with a plastic shot cup filled with #5 copper plated topped with another OS card....well it works I can get kiiling patterns to 40 yards. and my bore looks just as shiny as they it was new......just my two cents

Yes I agree with what you say these fowlers along with the bank guns and the punt guns were Tools Of The Trade it was a living ,but not today to shoot sitting birds is not sporting .

Enclosed is another image of a flintlock converted to percussion long fowler which I have just restored .The maker is Barker 1785 -87 London it is a 7 bore with a 40 inch iron barrel .
