Much more likely. The laws of physics would be less comprimized by a bone fragment going in the generally opposite direction than in a lead ball doing the same. For every action there is an equal, and opposite, reaction....I think is how it goes. If you believe the Warren Report, that would explain brain tissue and bone on the trunk of the car Kennedy rode in Dallas.
 
I shot a deer with my .58 Virginia rifle and the ball flattened and exited sideways leaving just a small slit as an exit, took forever to find it.
 
Bullets do crazy things. My dad shot a doe with a 7mm mag. The bullet never made past the ribs. Just followed them until it stopped in the skin by the sternum. The impact put her down when my dad got to her he cut her throat to finish her.
