My wife sent me pics of my welcome home gift,an Early Lancaster kit from PR. I'm very pleased w/ the stock, more stripe than what I paid for. A couple more weeks in my OIF tour and I'll be home diving into the project (along w/ spending time with my wife and kid  ).

Anyhow, my question is is there anything special I have to do with the lock itself like hardening the frizzen or polishing the backside since it looks a little rough? Is it ok to install as is? Need some advice to help me plan ahead. Appreciate the help.

You shouldn't have to do any hardening, but you'll probably want to polish that lock, at least enough to get the casting marks off of it.

Then again, every time I came home from a tour rifle building was the last thing on my mind! :hatsoff:

You might take a look here for some pointers on the lock:

I think the lock is a large Siler? I'm just in the process of polishing my Siler, lots of careful filing, 150 grit emery paper and crocus for finish. I'm trying to get off the grey factory finish then remove most of the pitting etc underneath, then will probably try to age the steel to a grey patina rather than leave it shiny. It takes a lot of time but like everything else with gunbuilding is good to get your mind off other things!
But plenty of builders seem to leave the lock as it comes and then brown it.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I wasn't sure if the Siler lock was good as is or if I needed to harden some parts. I plan on jeweling the insides to help it fuction smoother and brown the outside like the barrel.
