Anyone sell big Chunks of English flint for to use with a striker?I got some once from TOW.But,I don't deal with them any more.

You used to be able to buy flint nodules from Dixie but the last time I was in there, they didn't have any. She said that they hadn't had any in a while. I don't know if they were just out at that time or if they quit carrying them. But, they show them in their current catalog as item number FA3000 Flint Nodule. Check them out at www.dixiegunworks.com

I got abunch of Rich Pierce's off fall from his napping and it works well

I bought a small bag full at Dixon's last year. I guess that he still sells them. I'll find out on Saturday. If he still has them, I'll let you know.

I just walk field edges and stream beds with my firesteel looking for any rocks that look like they'll work. Anything that I can get sparks with I stick in my pocket. If I need to knap it a bit to get a sharp edge, I do that at home.

I second Rich Pierce's shards, I bought a enough to last me a lifetime a couple of years ago, Richs flints are a tad hard, but work great and knap well.

I was surprised to find that you don't actually need "flint" for "flint & steel", any rock that is hard enough will strike a spark off a good steel.
Flint is nice because of the way it cleaves, but there are a lot of alternatives lying round for fire starting.

I use quartz for "flint" and steel, mostly because I can walk out the back door and pick it up off the ground (by the ton if I wanted to!) Where I usually go hunting/fishing/camping its everywhere too, and it works as well as flint once you chip it so it has a sharp edge.

Does anyone Know Where I Can Buy A Nice Steel Striker For A Reasonable Price ? I Am Going To Buy Some Flints From Rich But I'll Need a Good Striker Too. I Live In The San Joaquin Valley In California. Thanks For Any Ideas.

There are classifieds here where they come up from time to time. IIRC, a guy named longhunter does a little forgework. You might try a "Wanted" advertisement there.

I have a couple really good ones from www.primalconnection.com and will probably get another one or two from them, but there are lots of smiths who can make them. I got my first ones from Track of the Wolf and they also work well. But the ones from Primal Connection are better quality IMO and you're supporting someone who's helping put food on the table by keeping an ancient craft alive. IMO, they're worth a couple more bucks.

I bought a whole bag of flint for fire starting last year off of ebay. I don't remember who the seller was but they also sold whole flint and steel kits as well.

Gunflints work amazingly well and are compact enough to pack easily.

I bought one from Crazy Crow Trading Post about 20 years ago and its still sparking good.I got the early colonial.

Well I bought one from Primal while in the process of making my own. It is a VERY nice striker ! It gave me a way to compare the one I made. The Primal one is a lot better looking but mine sparks as well. Nilo52

I just got back from a "Gem and Mineral" show in Holland, MI. Checked around for some proper stone and came away with two good size pieces of obsidian (1/2 dollar size +), one large piece of quartz, and a palm size piece of flint an inch + thick. Not too bad for $3.00. Still keeping my eyes open, even if it's not English flint.
