Obsidian, like glass, is not hard enough to give good sparks.

Thanks for the heads up. I was going to try it and was told it should work (shocking someone would say that while while trying to sell something :rotf: ). Glad I grabbed the flint and chert pieces when I saw the chance. Will have to try something else with the obsidian.

We were at the 21st Annual Stone Tools And Craftsman's Show a few weeks ago..
A guy named Kenny Wallace was kind enough to show us how he makes gun flints .. he's designed a sweet little rig..
Also met a guy named Eric Morris.
He sells Indiana horn stone; which seems to be better than English Black flint..
It's a bit harder; but puts out the sparks really good ..
These people are like this group - willing to share; teach, and help others ..
Just plain good folk..
Ken doesn't have a website ;
Eric has one http://www.find-it-usa.com/ericsrocks/index.html
I've never used Rich's flints; but they gotta rock !!!!
I helps this helps - this is a great place to camp out ..

I'm kind of surprised at you fellers..

Take your favorite steel and start testing rocks you find. ANY old piece of chert or flint will make all the sparks you need.

If the chunk you find is too big to tote, take it home, PUT ON SOME EYE PROTECTION and smack it with a hammer that you don't care too much about. Make it fit.
