Some poor miserable souls are buying caps at outrageous prices. I can always find a rock that will work. I fully expect an average of 120 shots per flint, while the guys with cap guns are popping off several caps to clear the barrel before shooting. Poor, unenlightened miserable souls. My heart weeps for them.

There are lots of rocks in East Tennessee that are good for flints.

Not as pretty as store bought but they work just as good. They’re easy and fun to make but best of all they’re free!

I shot traditional archery my whole life. (64) years old and for some unexplained reasons I never done any knapping. Made my own self bows and cane arrows also. When it came to arrowheads I guess I’ve been fortunate as I’ve always traded arrows and feathers for knapped heads and always been gifted some arrow heads along the way. Got a couple of buckets of flint and chert so I reckon this old dog needs to learn a new skill.

I have a spot set up in the barn for making flints. I’m still learning but it’s very relaxing. It’s a good feeling too when I fire a flintlock with a homemade flint.
