As a complete and doe-eyed newbie, I went thru a phase of purchasing muzzleloader rifles and pistols with hopes of learning and enjoying the hobby. Unfortunately, I never got around to shooting any of them. I simply don't have the time, so I've decided to offer them for sale to a new home.

The first up is this beautiful Austin & Halleck Mountain Rifle (Percussion). Made in the preferred Weston, MO factory. (Or so I've read many times.) Brown-blued barrel. 50 Caliber with 1:66 Twist. The rifle is near flawless / pristine. I'm very tempted to keep this one. Overall excellent / pristine / like new condition. $1000 $900

I don't own a gun shop, but I do live in Greenville, SC, and I'd be thrilled to hear more about this. Please share.

Why are the sights on backwards?

No clue. I'm told both front and back are on backwards. Funny thing. In my research on A&H Mountain rifles, I learned two things. First, the A&H rifles are generally believed to be of very high quality. Second, more than one person has sights that were on backwards. LOL Crazy.

I have a rifle, can. .45 cal, built and signed by D. T. Peden for Robert McElveen. I found the customer's name on the tax rolls for that county. Made between either 1855 and 1861, or 1865 and 1870. Peden spent the majority of the WBTS making ammunition at the SC Armory, and evidently not building guns for private customers. D. T. was the fourth and last generation of this Irish gunmaking family.
The rifle has some unique traits for the time. Definite Southern styling, but NOT a Southern MOUNTAIN Rifle. Distinctive Peden "'stepped" upper end of the buttplate, w/ a hooked breech.; back-action lock. Unique set trigger arrangement that requires the set trigger to be engaged, for the main trigger to hold at full-cock (I have read that this was a common arrangement on Peden guns.)
Fancy and ornate patchbox, w/ a separate covered .45 "groove" to hold spare balls.
Wood in stock is in VG condition; I didr repair a thin split in forearm using homemade animal glue.
Barrel has been over-tightened on breech, evidently to stop a pressure leak.

Not trying to sell this rifle... It's the first time I have had a chance to share a piece of someone's "hometown history" with someone from where the gun was built, and who would enjoy seeing it. Riflemaking in the hill country isn't as well-studied as the SMR"s, NC guns, etc., but it had its own niche. Just sharing, not selling.
When I decide to sell something, it'll be on the right board, with pics of item and required info included.
