I'm going for this one:

New England Colonial Fowler/Militia Musket

RK-09.jpg

Not sure yet if I'll go pick it up or just have it sent here.

But it's got what I want and have heard nothing but superlatives for Jim Chambers kits.

I'm going to order the double set trigger.

I'm going to order the double set trigger.

:shake:

Why put rifle triggers on such a nice fowler? It's not a target gun. Of course, it is your gun and you can do what you want. I just thin it is a bad idea. :surrender:

and to laffindog,

well, I'm still a real rookie.

So enlighten me, I wanna know the right way.

wrong has too many options.

Look at it this way, a double set trigger on a smoothbore like that is like salting a salt stick.
You don't need it. A smoothie is not a precision accurate gun like a rifle. You just don't need it. The thread counters will try to put a pink tu-tu on you. It just ain't 'authentic' and could get you in trouble with the PC police.
But, it's yer gun, this is America. Do what you want.
I have a gun in progress now that won't pass muster with the PC police. Their problem, not mine.

:rotf:

I put the bumps in the wrong places for tu-tus. Pink ain't my color. well, maybe in one spot it is. but that ain't nuttin to do with a tu-tu.

:v

Gotcha!

Well, pc I'm not, and I likely smell funny.

I hadn't given any thought to the target rifle point. And salt on a salt stick does seem a bit repetitive.

I think I'm beginning to get the point.

I'm not going to order until I get the parts sorted out this way.

so fellers, ya cain't damage the one little feelin' I got, so let 'er rip.
:surrender:

I don't own a "fowler" per se, but have severals smoothbores. I seldom use mine with ball, but I can say for sure that a double trigger is a nuisance with shot, as you're likely to be using in the fowler at least some of the time. I placed a GM 62 cal smooth barrel on a TC Hawken stock and it just wasn't working out for me. Moved it to a single-trigger Renegade stock and it sure seems to work better for me. Can't put a finger on why, but there it is. If I was to shoot RB through the same barrel much, I can't see moving it back to the Hawken stock with the double trigger.

Just look at pictures of original and contemporary fowlers. The ask yourself, "why do I want double set triggers when nobody else does?" Can you tell us why you even considered it? Is it because your current rifle has them and that's what you're used to? Will you use the fowler for shot or round ball or both? Without a rear sight and rifling, do you expect the sort of accuracy that would merit double set triggers?

If it's not a problem, why is everyone warning him? :haha:

I didn't know that nobody else does.

Yes and yes.

Will you use the fowler for shot or round ball or both?

I want it for turkey, but want to be able to do both.

Without a rear sight and rifling, do you expect the sort of accuracy that would merit double set triggers?

Hadn't thought of that and no.

Well one thing, I learned more in less time by asking a stupid question than I would have some other way. :haha:

:v

One more observation on double set triggers, they will disqualify you from most if not all smoothbore shoots. You may not participate now but if you ever attend a club shoot and want to shoot the smoothe you will be out of luck with set triggers.

mbokie, I like yer attitude.
We are having some fun with you. But, actually, this is a good thread. The discussion of double-set vs. single triggers on a smoothbore can be helpful ot other newcomers to the game. Some valid points are being made here.
Keep us informed of what you decide and good luck.

The reasons you don't want a set trigger in that gun is it removes some of it's versatility. It also probably would not fit in the trigger guard.
A set trigger is designed for steady aimed fire. While they can be fired unset, trigger pull is murder.
One of the great things about a fowler is that it is great for short range round ball and great for shot also. A set trigger would remove some of the handiness it has an upland shot gun, bird gun and point and shoot round ball gun.
A properly set up simple trigger on a tuned lock will give you crisp let off that many, even rifle shooters, feel is superior to a mechanical set trigger.

there are no stupid questions when trying to learn about this sport, the double trigger thing is not needed on this gun anymore than it would be on your 870 pump, you have recieved good advive on this issue, there is always good support here for those in need, enjoy the journey

I just got my fowler and I'm learning on the go so if I'm talking out of school - humor me. Reading this thread it seems to me that double set triggers is for lying in wait and stealth, the advantage of taking time for accuracy.
When the bevy of quail explode you don't want to be fooling with an extra trigger. When the rabbit runs it's aim - BOOM, not hold on now the front trigger is set OK...where'd he go ? :idunno:

Well, really I had not thought about any of this. So for me, it's all good. I learned a pile.

So ok, I'll dispense with any double set triggers on any such gun. I think I get it now. :surrender:

So let's move on to whether or not it's a nice smoothie.

:v

I'm thinkin' it is. I've read excellent reviews on Jim Chambers offerings.

Thoughts fellers?

Jim's NE Fowler is a great piece. I've built two 10ga in cherry. Jug choked the barrels and they are turkey killers. Two so far last season.

Jim's pieces are also architecturally right on. It would be a shame to change that by putting a set trigger on it. Just set the trigger up right, and you'll have a nice, light, clean trigger pull.

You'll love that gun!!

Sounds like everything else I've heard about the Chambers' pieces.

Nope, nope, set trigger is out. Don't want no shame on my guns. :surrender:

:haha:

i've built and shoot the NE fowler, i'm glad that you are dropping the set trigger idea, because it won't fit in the trigger guard. :haha:
