OK FOLKS, next Tuesday is as we all know, election day. NO this isn't a political post in the wrong place. What I want to talk about is the day AFTER next Tuesday.

See, ALL of those lovely, roadside, campaign signs have metal supports, and they can be gathered up by us to hold targets. Some are H shaped but the larger ones are often a single piece of very thick wire running up the side, through the top, and down the opposite side. These are great for both cardboard AND novelty targets like hanging targets such as eggs, clay birds, ship's biscuit, or balloons, etc. So GATHER them up for reuse on your range.

CHECK your local area regulations. A few counties in the US actually spend your tax dollars paying county employees to gather up the signs from the side of the roads and then store them for collection by the candidates without charging the candidates a dime. HOWEVER, most counties require the candidates to remove them from the roads, and to do so within say 24 hours, or they become abandoned property or trash. These then are free for the gathering.

Be careful they are on the sides of the roads and not in a person's yard as they are private property unless posted on the right-of-way, after the required time limit to remove them has passed.

Four years ago in less than 30 minutes I was able to gather a dozen or so, and they have worked very well. Not just for simple target holders, but also for holders at ranges with installed holders, at set distances..., when allowed one can place targets at "odd" distances, so if you want to check your sights at say 65 yards OR you simply want to practise shooting at unknown distances. PLUS if you're hosting an event, even a non-shooting event, and the location is not well marked, you have a supply of stands to support route markers to direct incoming participants and tourists.

If I remember correctly someone made some strikers
from that heavy gauge wire as well. :idunno:

Great idea Dave! I have also taken up a few over the last couple of decades and reused them to make up holders for yard sale signs.

They would be much more light weight and portable compared to the old pallets that I have reassigned the tasks of target backer's.

Also have what I wasn't planning, but an accumulation of old campaign signs in what some would call a collection.

Hmmmm, Ross Perot would be proud :haha:

I've been using these for a few years. They hold up great. Some thicker corrugated cardboard will slide right down on the wire and can be reused over and over with some masking tape over previous holes.

Happy shooting!

Been doing this for years. Take special pleasure shooting at the candidates I didn't vote for...

I used one some years ago, a candidate who I was happy to help vote OUT! I just turned it so his life-sized mug was on the backside of the holder, then stuck my target in the appropriate place. (I didn't want to be accused of practicing to be an assassin. )

I have a fresh one for the next trip to the range.

Well pi$$ on them, it's our money there spending!

I agree. No government entity should have to remove political signs. I have been and active politico all of my life. I have put up and removed countless signs. My local party makes it a point to go out day after election and remove our candidates signs. We even pull the opposition if they are not too far out of the way for us.
And, yes, I do save and use for targets.

I've tried them and found that when you attach cardboard or paper targets on the frame then stick it in the ground all is well UNTIL the wind starts blowing. It acts like a sail and moves all over the place. I have since scrapped them as I do not like chasing my targets all over as in MOVING TARGETS.

I picked up four signs from one corner today. They have had plenty of time to get their signs so now they are mine if I see them. Even if I don't use the wire base for target supports, I do cut the wire into lengths for other uses. Never know when you are going to need some heavy duty wire.

They do make good target backers, but wait the proper amount of time before snagging them. The signs are the property of the candidate and most counties allow a certain time after the election before they have to be removed, usually two weeks but some places may vary. If they are still there after the prescribed period they are fair game, but before then they are still private property.

That is a good use for campaign signs. I was rather hoping to see a Hillary sign in your sights though. LOL
