oh come on RB... we were just about to get into the "Name Calling", then a quick transition into the a "Personal Attack", and then finally the total nuclear options of us both PM'ing Claude to complain about the other person. Dang it... you just went and took all the fun out of it. :winking:

You're correct, it's whatever works in your particular rifle/gun. It wasn't my intent to disparage the good name of TC. They manufacture a great product with a warranty that is second to none.

I dont know the truth behind this but I have heard that the americans mined flint (Indiana horn stone) in sothern Indiana at one time because there source in Michigan (Flint) was in british hands. Makes since but I have nothing to verify it. By the way thats what I use Horn stone works great and free.

I think the US has repaid the French many times over during WWI and WWII...if it wasn't for the US, German would be their national language by now

If it wasn't for the French we would all be speaking English by now!

I hope yo do not have cpoyrights on that one ,
I will be using it quite a lot in a near future ,
You just made my day !
Merci .

I have no problem with the French, but your statement is totaly untrue. If you'll read the History of that time, you'll find overall the French hurt us more than they helped us.

We would have won without them & that is a fact!

Who cares ?

One statement is humor ,the other an hypothesis

Guess wich I choose ?

[I tried a couple dozen 3/4" Horst & McCann french amber flints...the length of them varied so much that half were too short to bother with]

I sell M.Dutrieux's flints and have received very high praise for them. Many of my customers have returned again and again to buy more. I have sold them to traders who have completely sold out of them at reenacting/living history events.

I don't know for certain which flints are objectively better, and I have asked folks to test them for me. Hopefully we will someday soon get some evidence based analysis of the French vs. the English flints. In the meantime, I would like to assure EVERYONE that our flints have a money back guarantee, meaning that they may be returned for a full refund, plus any postage incurred if not completely satisfied. We will even hand select flints to precise measurements at no additional cost. I offered to do this for Roundball, but unfortunately, he did not take me up on this offer. I regret that he did not think that he received full value for his dollar.

First I think your business approach is way out of line calling a customer out by name on a public forum. I made an objective, factual, posting of my experience with your flints and you need to learn to deal with it...your product is not perfect...period...so get over it.

Secondly, for real objectivity, the WHOLE story needs to be told the way it really happened, not slanted as you just made it seem.

Your offer of a return for full refund came only "after" you had seen a similar objective factual post of mine about my lack-luster experience with your french amber flints...and at a time when the flints I had bought were no longer available for return / refund.

In addition, the money is not even the issue...a couple dozen flints isn't worth the hassle of fooling with all the back and forth anyway.

The facts are very clear:

The 3/4" french amber flints I bought from horst were nowhere near as good as the black English flints I've been using for years...by any measure of durability, cost, and dependability...period.

As a result, I know of no reason why I would buy any more of those french amber flints...period.
You may not like hearing it, but you brought it up, and those are the facts.

I do not take kindly to you spreading false misleading posts about me...and rest assured, I'll make it a high priority to give your french flints all the advertisement they deserve if I see it again.

Actually, the offer to refund the money was made on 5/7/05, the day you expressed your dissatisfaction with the product in a personal email to me. I qoute from an email of that date: "If you would prefer not to exchange the flints, please send me the ones you find unacceptable, and I will refund your money. I regret that the flints did not live up to your expectations."

The intent of my earlier post was not to defend the quality of the flints, only to assure the public that they can expect good value for their money, with the confidence of knowing that they will not lose their hard earned money doing business with a brand new mailorder business. Reputation takes a long time to build, and I am adament about giving excellent service for the dollar spent. I am especially proud of the fact that, when someone orders something from Horst and McCann, it will be in their hands as quickly as humanly possible. No back orders, no sitting around waiting to go out in the mail when it is convenient for us. I also am extremely sensitive to the sight unseen nature of mail order. I know that the concern lurks in the backs of everyone's mind about what they are purchasing. Will it meet expectations? That is why the money back guarantee. This guarantee is real, it is posted on the website, and will absolutely be fulfilled. You mentioned that the cost of a couple dozen flints is not significant. Well, it IS significant to some folks with a limited budget, and I take an order that is valued at $2 just as seriously as I take an order for $5,000, because it is the consumer's money, not mine, until everyone is satisfied. Please accept my apology for the obvious offence my previous email caused. It was not the intent to insult or belittle you.

Mr. horstguns,
You sound like a person we might like to do business with. Will take a look at your site and see if there is anything we can use. May have to wait until after the first of the year though; Grandkids and Christmas, you know.
Best Wishes

Just to add my two cents worth here. I have been buying both Tom Fuller black english flints and French Blondes from Horst & McCann for my Chambers English lock and my Pedersoli. I am not sure I can tell a lot of difference. Both seem to spark well. Both are a little more irregular in shape/size than I would like cause I am not really a good knapper!! Both have some flints that seem to last forever and some that crack and split the first time they are fired. I am convinced that flints are an art and not a science. so I just use the ones that seem to fit best.

I will say that the last batch I ordered from both places, I asked them to send flints that woould specifically fit my locks and the uniformity was much better than previous orders from both places. It actually has been a pleasure doing business with both.

So I suggest that if you are going to order either type you call and ask them to pick some good flints that will fit your lock. Then just hope that mother nature did her part as well!!
