My family started in Virginia in the 1600s came through Biloxi and were in Spanish LA before coming to Texas. Great great grandfather was the last living Civil War vet to die in Newton County at 95. My family were English living in a french/spanish culture and I am wanting to learn more about what firearms they may have had access to. My goal is to begin flintlock hunting in the Big Thicket.

Welcome from Richmond, Texas. Shame you did not post a week ago. I'd have sent you to the Presidio at Goliad this weekend where the Texas Association of Buckskinners has their only "Open to the Public" event of the year. The camp would have talked your ears off trying to answer your questions and offering help. We love pilgrims.

This forum is a great place to ask questions and learn. There are a few twits who think their way is the only way and will try to outshout you to feed their ego. Judicious use of the twit filter (click on name, click 'ignore') returns the threads to peaceful learning and sharing. This is the best place on the web for open discussion I've found in over 10 years. Have Fun!

Welcome from Dallas. My ancestor also arrived in Virginia in 1651. Cromwell secured him an 8 year guaranteed position in a tobacco firm! We did not come to Texas until 1852.

Welcome from San Antonio! Where in Texas are you located? Shoot, we might be distant cousins.

According to Ancestry.com, my first ancestor on this continent was "Transported" via "Endenture" by the Virginia Company from Sussex to Isle of White, VA. around 1615-1620. Records get spotty and hard to cooberate that far back though.

I too have just gotten started in black-powder shooting. I've long been an avid shooter, and recently joined the Alamo Muzzleloading Gun Club, and shot in my second "First Sunday" match there just yesterday! Welcome aboard, I look forward to learning along side you.
