Gentlemen,While cleaning out my chest freezer I came upon 5 one pound bags of frozen venison.I harvested this deer on 27 November 2004.I do believe the meat has never thawed. Is this meat still fit for human consumption or should I feed it to the dogs? How long will venison keep?Best Regards,J.A.

My personal opinion is that if it isn't "freezer burnt", and if it never thawed out in the interim (power outage, etc.) then its probably good.

I have ate Deer meat kept in a freezer for more than 2 years and it was good.It was however wrapped very good with a layer of wax butcher paper and then a good thick freezer bag.

Have eaten frozen venison that was older than yours.... airtight wrapping is the key. I have a brother-in-law that gives me fish that's "mummified" and his method is to squeeze out all the air and then to double wrap. As previously stated, if no frezzer burn is evident, the meat should be fine.....Fred

I'll agree with the above. I'd eat it. Ya should be able to tell when ya start cooking it if it's good or not.

I'd cook it up , but if you still don't trust it, THEN feed it to the dogs. They don't mind cooked meat.

I have eaten stuff that is older than that in my freezer. It is ok , just won't taste as well as it should.

When I come across mystery meat as I call it, it goes into something spicy like a chili. Spices are wonderful for dealing with such issues.

Jack,
I'm with the rest...as long as it has no
frezzer burn it's ok to use for whatever, although I to think it may not taste as good if
not froze that long. I think using it in chili or
soup is a great idea. If in doubt the dogs will
love it.
I do have one thought as far as thawing.
Thaw in the frig rather that just sitting it out
or using the nuke-box.
snake-eyes :hatsoff:

Thawing the venison in the refrigerator requires long term planning....something that is foreign to me  Fred

Heck, I've foun' a fo'gotten carton of milk in th' back of th' reefer older than yer meat. Smelled OK - kind of thick though.

like the others have said if it isn't freezer burned it's good....i wrap all my meats in plastic wrap then butcher paper and never had a problem with freezer burn....even that long........bob

:hmm: :hmm: let's see now...what was it they said the average life expectancy was back then ???????

I was cleaning out my freezer earlier this spring and came across the same thing. Two five pound bags of vacuum sealed ground venison. It was from a 2004 deer. I took it and made Venison Salami and Bologna and it turned out excellent.

If you have any concern of the possible venison having a "taste" the making of sausage will help hide that. As long as it is not thawed, then it should be all right. Any doubts though, throw it away...

We are cleaning up the last of 2 year old venison and elk. It hasnt killed us yet. As long as it has been kept frozen and not freezer burnt, it will be ok. Like the man said, cook it and if ya dont like the taste, let the dogs have it.

I'm just trying to figure out how you all keep game meat around that long? :haha:

Here you have to beat everyone off with a stick before it all dissapears. :shocked2: :v

When you have a Bag limit of 32 deer :hmm: ........Just kidding.....Up here I'm only allowed 1 deer and without a Antlerless draw it's Buck only. Not a problem to eat 1 deer a year.

Well,I did'nt get to cook it,me wife has been onto me as of late. The reason I still have it is I moved from Texas to Florida in 2005.I will again be attempting to cook it this weekend if I can get free.Best regards,J.A.

Good wrapping will preserve it well, and the new vacum shrink wrappers. If it ain't freezer burnt (has bad taste, I've cooked some out of curiousity, wound up feeding to dog he loved it) it will still be good eating
