 These are my winter (cold weather) pacs. They are made a little larger and heavier than summer mocs to accept either sheepskin booties or felt pack boot liners.

 This page is what Ft Ligonier Historical Society gave to members of our group when we were privilaged to tour the basement archives. I punched small holes instead of slits for the lacing and sewing. I used small holes rather than slits to help prevent the leather from tearing. I also used a leather gouge w/guide to make a recessed channel on my sole bottom as to allow the threads a place to set and be safer from rocks and other things that may cut or break them. I also bought rectangular soles from LIETZAU TAXIDERMY BOX 12ML COSMOS MN 56228 Phone# 612 877-7297. I used Buffalo on the uppers on the winter packs for durability and warmth. The summer mocs can be made of deer or elk. I slightly rounded the toe area that rounded out more due to wear. The lace that holds the collar on is also your moc/boot snugging lace.
:v Your preference as to lace/sew the uppers to the sole. If you use a rolling stitch it may not last as long but it is easier to do. Regardless which you do, you should use two needles, going in the top and bottom of the same holes and then pull snug. Tie a knot every three to six holes. It helps prevent the soles from coming totally undone if you tear/break the stitching. Then you only need to repair the small area of the break.

How on Earth did you find Lietzau?
That's in my neck of the woods, I was just down there a week ago and dumped $160 on assorted plunder.
It's a Candy Store for Big Boy's!

Interesting little fun fact about Leitzau.
They supplied all of the Native dress (except the White Wedding dress) for the movie
"Dances with Wolves"
It took over 1000 hides ! And the stuffed birds for "Kicking Bird"'s tipi and a few other scenes.

Sorry folks, No Web site, it's another of those wonderful Mom-n-Pops (an the two boy's)

They were at an Eastern Rondy a lot a years back. I had a catalog, tracked down the phone # and called asked questions and woola! Leather good, fooforaw etc, etc, etc... They were nice to work with.

Can you send me the number for the leather place? I am needing some brain-tan leather.

I used Buffalo sides for the uppers and collars. I used Moose neck backs (Back of the Neck) for the soles since they are tighter (Harder) and thicker leather. I also use moose sole rectangles I purchased from Lietzau Leather. You can google that company and contact them. I believe they still have those sole rectangles. There is a large and medium set. I've made five seperate pairs, two summer and three pacs. Everybody still has them. I made my first pair, that I still use, back in the fall of 1983.

Thanks for the info. I have only made a couple pairs of center seams before, and never with soles. I would like to make a pair of these. How do you make the pattern big enough to go over the inserts comfortably? I am assuming that you have to have the inserts made first and make the pattern while wearing the inserts?

Correct. The best way to pattern the insert is to wear whatever socks you plan to wear and then put the insert on your foot. Step on the pattern paper/cardboard and trace around it. For best results do both feet this way. But just putting the sole down and tracing arouond it will work also.
