Hmmmmm :hmm: Interesting but what the heck are they? It? It is obviously a knife-like object.....but...uh....what the heck? :idunno:

Tang tong.....sounds like an actor in a Chinese martial arts movie. :haha:

Looks to be designed to keep the stock from rotating away from the hammer when striking along one edge. It seems it would help for hammering the bevel?

I'd hesitate to say that those were specifically designed for knives, as opposed to flat stock in general.

In my experience, the real problem with holding knives while forging is when the blade is in the vertical position, such as when refining the point or forging out the tang. Any old tongs will do for holding the blade flat to the anvil. Turn it edge-on, however, and the blade will end up flying up through the air if you don't think ahead. Been there, done that...

Ah-Hah!! Now I see what they are. They are tongs for holding a knife blade when it is being forged. When I first saw the picture, I thought they were part of the knife blade and I just couldn't figure what a knife blade with tongs attached would be used for. Pardon my stupidity.

They are definitely purpose made to hold flat stock...

If I were a Smithy/Farrier, I would use those to hammer out a horse shoe. It looks to be about the right width. :idunno: Are there any stamps or markings on it ? It almost looks like I can make out something on the bolt head. Could be just rust :idunno:
