Many years ago I made a fur hat with a leather bill, [like the one Charleston Heston wore in the Movie: [”the Mountain Man”] I also made a fur (Racoon) bag.

I found that over the years of packing it away, and taking it out to use. The hair stared to fall out, until I had to throw them out. How do you guys make stuff with fur and keep the hair from falling out over time?

Buy fur from a supplier that has it tanned properly.
It's a bad tanning job that makes the fur let loose. :idunno:

I don't know how long "years ago" is, but all tanned "hair on" items can loose some amount of hair from use, storage and time. ______ It's just the nature of the beast!

Woods, its just natural wear n tear from use, isn't any different then a pair of jeans wearing out over time. Generally there is a difference between hides with hair vs fur, deer, elk n such is hair n will continually shed over the years, fur on the other hand(bear, fox, coon, beaver etc) will usually not shed, or at least not much. But wear n tear(getting wet in the rain, snow covered n then drying out etc) on anything will let some material come loose. And as others have said it may have been bad tanning jobs but money would be on wear n tear. just some thoughts YMHS Birdman

There is also the problem of mites - various types will attack, horn, hair, feathers, skins, etc.
Mites are a major cause of all kinds of deterioration and is a big problem for conservators.

Thanks guys for your input. :hatsoff:

The hat was made from a fox hide and the bag was a coon that I brain tan and made the bag. [The fox hid my Father bought for me back in 74] I made both items around 1976 or 77, the hair started to slowly come out starting around 1985 and by 89 they were so bad I got rid of them. I used them a lot during those years. At Roudys, hunting, & to Schools for teaching. I always stored my stuff in a spare room in the house. As I still do. To keep rodents & such away from my stuff.

I believe it must be as horner75 said; “It's just the nature of the beast”.

The top of me noggin used to be full of fur. But time and use has changed that too! :rotf:
