I'm sure I will have more but my first hurdle or set back is,,, I ordered a 42 in barrel and was jug choked. Well I got a 38 in jug choked. I pick barrel lengths and such due mainly looks. Would you send it back ? Probably take forever to get a jug choke 42 in. They only had one and this was it. I bet when the guy found it in inventory he didn't ck the length.Of course grouping and shot pattern should be #1 but fooey i wanted 42 for the look. If I finish the gun I know I may not even notice the 4 in. Shorter barrel.BUT

Will the 4 in shorter shoot as good as a 42. Tell me the truth I got a padded rm to go to even I don't get my way. LOL

May as well throw this in there toothed side plate and trigger gaurd look to be the ones that would be mount on the surface not inletted.They are rounded on the sides and seems that if inletted any would leave a gap or raised wood look around them.

Are you making a de chasse gun from a kit? The side plate is inlet flush. The triggerguard sits on top of the wood. The original trigger guards were concave, so they sat better on the wood.

Looks like if I try to inlet this one flush the wood will look like it's riding up and over the plate. Maybe the sent the wrong one. Are there more plates to choose from. If so I will on track. I like this style better but I'm going to try and do it right as I can. What about the barrel length?

Throw that one away. Google fusil de chasse and see what the originals had. Flat piece of iron with out those stupid curly cues on the back. You could use the front part of the one you have as pattern to trace around

I found one at track. It is brass. Wouldn't take me much to order all the furniture in steel.

Yeah ...they are darn easy to make if you want to ....I make mine . When bolts are drilled take paper and rub pencil over the holes and side plate border ....then just take the paper , with holes and border plainly marked , and draw in the side plate . There's your pattern . And it will fit perfectly . Very easy project .....

Would you have it swapped for a 42 which is what I ordered.

Crow I would contact the supplier and ask. It's your project and money so they should get you what you ordered. Find out how long it would take to get you what you want.

Also, make sure the octagon part of the barrel is tapered as well as the round part. Many suppliers don't bother to taper the flats. Track, for instance, sells barrels that are tapered and some that are not.

Forget what I said before, I was going by memory, which isn't what it once was. I went and found the book. De chasse guns were ordered with two barrel lengths. 4 pieds and also 3 pieds 8 pouces. 4 pieds is 51 1/4". 3 pieds 8 pouces is 46 7/8". That being said many surviving originals have 45 1/2" long barrels.
Barrels are oct/rnd and tapered, but not flared at the muzzle

It is a no brainer! You are not happy with what you got. It stinks about the mistake, but better get what you want or your never going to be happy. I personally like 42 and would never settle for a 38.

I was thinking that the shorter length was 3 1/2 pieds which would be about 44 1/2 English inches.
