Figured it was time ,took him shooting ,taught him how to load and fire. The rifle a hand made 42 .38cal Early fat-butted Lancaster stocked G-4 maple and L-siler flintlock. About 15 shots off the bench to start. 4-5" group,50grs fffg,.375 ball .015 patch. His eyes got real big after a few shots when I told him thats your rifle now and you will have to learn to shoot it and clean it. Allso I told him thats a $800 rifle you will have to buy your own bag and horn. Come this deer season you will be ready!!! To hunt like a longhunter. When the 9 year old gets bigger I"ll make him one too! Dad he says "this is more fun than the 22!!" Moma did not say anything when we got home,I assume shes ok with it.

Fowler, congratulations on your gift to your son. I am sure he will always cherish it. It is special to have sons that enjoy the same things you do. Hang on to him as long as ya can, they get old and leave home all too soon.

The young bucks are not only the future of our sport but also the future of our freedom . Two thumbs up on bringing your boys up right . My boy is 17 and he fired his first shot just after he got out of diapers and he and i just returned from an afternoon of shooting . Boys that hunt , fish and shoot with thier dads ain't the ones hanging out in malls , taking drugs and getting into trouble with the law . Set a good example and a high standard and your boys will make you proud . At this moment i'm reaching through the internet and shaking your hand . :RO:

That's wonderful - brought a tear to my eye - reminded me of the Christmas my girls got their shotguns. Gotta take pride in that ackomplishment.
: One is still in the game and has become my hunting partner.
: Good luck with yours.

fowler,
I made my son an English flinter in .54 for his twelfth birthday. You got me beat by 3 years  The first time each of my three children shot a pistol I had to cup my hands around theirs to help them hold it. None are hunter at the moment, too many earthshaking decisions going on in their lives, but they all turned out fine. And they enjoy guns whenever the situation puts them in the presence of shooters. :)
God bless.

Hey there, don't forget about the girls. I only have girls (4 of them so pray for me :() and I gave the oldest her first gun when she was 11 and now she's 13. It's a .40 cal. Mowrey percussion and she just loves to shoot it as well as throwing her hawk. The 10 year old now shoots it as well and now she wants one as well. Both know how to load properly and clean. Safety first and foremost. The oldest also has a set of period clothes and they both help out at the club when we go. It's important to try and have some quality time and this is some of the best. No time for fishing yet but they love to camp and shoot. Plan on getting the oldest into NC state competition next year so lots of time to practice since she uses a rest right now. Her vice principal in school also shoots with us and has told the boys to watch out for her because she knows how to shoot as well as throw a hawk. Hmmmm, not sure if that news will keep them away or make her more interesting :shocking:.

Gosh, Lance, 4 girls and probably a wife too. Don't you DARE leave that toilet seat up!

bdarin,
Okay, I'll bite, what does your signature line mean? I believe it is Spanish, am I correct?
God bless.

Congrats. I still remember the first smoke pole my father gave me at age 11. Is not so fine a gift as the one you gave but I cherish it and will never part with it.

I am sure your son feels the same way.
