I just did a google search. Check out 'raise a copper vessel' for an overview of the technique. There are several videos of the process.

The technique in which a malleable metal is ornamented or shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief is called repoussé.

Those turned out fine Sir, very nice job. A friend of mine makes them by putting down a small amount of sand on his concrete patio and hammers them with a ball peen hammer. It has the same effect as yours however leaves a really nice effect from the sand, wish I had a picture as they really turn out nicely. Mebbe I have a new project.... :hmm:

Yup.
Annealing copper and a lot of copper alloys works just the opposite of steel.

While quenching the higher carbon steels from a red heat will harden them, quenching copper from a red heat will soften or anneal it.

I don't have a neat rectangular box like Stumpies but for years I've carried a CCI Percussion cap box with (dare I say it?) tobacco in it.
It's handy for those "No Smoking" areas that are getting posted everywhere.
I don't even have to sit in the back of the bus anymore. :)

I used a propane torch to burn off the paint and to get a nice mottled blue color on it.
Never go anywhere without it.

Excellent work! :hatsoff: How did you make the compartments in the larger tin? Thanks, rushcc.

I used a scrap hanging file from work and did a lot of 'sperimintatin to get the dimensions right so it all folds and fits tightly. It's all just friction fit together.

Lately I've been using a plain one to carry six paper cartridges for my fowler.

Any tips for making that hinge set up they use to work better?
I find that to be the downfall of the Altoids tin esp after "burning", all the carbon left from the paint seems to make the hinge work kinda stiff,,

Thanks for the quick reply. I can't wait to make one. Again, great idea! :applause:

Sorry to drag up an old thread but it's relevant.

Yesterday I came across a good supermarket find that that reminded me of this thread. If you're lucky/unlucky enough to live close to a Whole Foods market they sell a breath mint in a tin that is also very well suited for our uses. Same L&W as the Altoids tin but about 1/8" more shallow and with no embossing. Also was only like $1.50

It'll be nice once I burn the paint off.
