Wow that is an odd puppy. good post. is the 'cylinder/frame/barrel' asssembly turned by hand? got any details?

Push the trigger forward to rotate the cylinder, pull rearward to cock and fire. Just about a two handed proposition. If you look closely at how the barrel is attached to the frame, it is almost exactly like Colts' revovlers. The action is very similar to the ancient Volcanic rifles and pistols, more like a lever action, than a double action in operation.

As I understand it, pistols like these were made shortly after Colts Paterson started selling Colts design.

They were usually made by companies that had been producing pepperboxes and were made to compete with Colt.

The pistol in the photo seems to be one of the modified pepperbox pistols that automatically rotate the cylinder and cock the bar hammer by pulling on the ring trigger but some of them (usually with a hammer spur so the thumb could cock the hammer) needed to have the cylinder rotated by hand.

These guns often sold for much less than the Paterson which contributed to its downfall.

zonie :)
