Does anyone have a good way to get powder into a horn that has no removable base pug? If I get a funnel that fits inside my spout, the powder (FFg)stacks up in the funnel. Folded/rolled paper gives me the same problem. I always end up spilling some powder. Just wondering whether anyone had any tricks that I hadn't thought of...

No base plug eh?

Pour small amounts of FFg at a time into the funnel, shaking your hand (that is holding the horn) helps to vibrate the grains enough to keep them from clotting...

Next time you go to the doctor's check out the ear canal exam-funnel tubes hanging on the exam-room's wall... :winking:

I bet your doctor would give you one if you asked...

One thing that I learned from looking at some original horns is they generally have larger holes in the spout than I see on a lot of horns made today. Most of the originals look like they are 5/16" dia or larger, while today I see a lot that are abot 1/4".
I started drilling mine a little larger and the filling problem went away.

Regards, Dave

I just fold a piece of paper into a trough, and use that to pour in the powder...shaking the horn from time-to-time helps avoid a buildup-block under the entry point. Hank

I just use a funnel made for modern reloading. They are hour glass shaped and go over the end of the horn. I still half to shake or tap the horn, but it works well for me.

Do as described in the above posts - have a newspaper under your horn to catch what you lose, then collect and use.

I use a funnel made by RCBS for modern reloading, the end of the funnel does not fit in the powder horn I just line the holes in the horn and funnel up hold with my left hand and pour the powder in.It works easier than a paper funnel for me.

I have a brass shell (.30-.30 I think) with the end cut off soldered to a powder can cap that had a hole drilled in it. Works well as a funnel this way. Still have to shake/vibrate some to keep the flow going.

That's what I have as well...a Goex cap with a brass funnel made into it...Probably have had the thing 25 years or more....I swear when I saw the topic I thought it was going to be a joke.... :rotf:

I robbed one of the wife's kitchen funnels, the funnel spout OD is near the same as that of horn end. I mate up spout to horn, use masking tape to secure and pour powder into the funnel while tapping the horn base on the bench. No spills and works for me.

Dixie offers a screw on cap for BP cans for shooting bench use. It has a small plastic funnel built into the cap and comes with a snap on cap for the funnel. By trimming the tip off the funnel you can get an opening of 1/8 in. in diameter and even smaller if you use a little care. Should work fine for filling horns.

I did the same thing. I used an empty SKS shell. It fits into my pistol flask and my powder horn. I glued mine in with apoxy. Works great! I thought I was the only one with that idea. It turns out every one had the same idea! :winking:

Another advocate for paper. Brass funnels are nice, but I have to get it out first. Paper is close at hand. :haha:

I've always just taped a paper cone to the spout, poured in powder while I kinda tapped the horn on my knee to keep it from clogging. Takes a couple minutes, but it's simple and I'm lazy.

I've always filled my horn by wraping my hand around the top of the horn creating a little funnel with my hand, keeping the hole in the horn down below the level of my thumb and index finger. Pour the power into the hole/dish in the top of your hand. Pour slowly as needed...no problems mate. :shake:

This works well for me too and it's much faster than looking for or making a funnel. And, one less "gadget".
