I had just lit the Mr. Heater to take the chill out of the borrowed lodge as my wife and I were tidying up the place up a bit. Since it was very cold and windy, I was still wearing my fringed hunting frock as I had been all day chopping wood, stoking the fire and cooking over it. (I was loaning out my capote to visiting friends to keep them warm while we sat around the fire.)

We continued to shift stuff around in an attempt to clean up the lodge. I had just said to my wife, "What is that funny smell?" As I turned to look at her, she also turned to look at me and we both were surprised to see the left-back side of my frock ablaze and the fringe acting as a trailer to quickly spread the fire. We knocked out the fire with our hands and I went outside just to make sure there would be no problem with all that canvas around me. Looking back, it all seemed so matter of fact and all I could say was that my frock now has some character!

The next day a patch was made from coffee stained linen to somewhat match the frock's color and sewn into the missing part of the frock.

We chuckle now but I am also a bit wiser about wearing cotton fringe around a radiant propane heater. Some of you may know that I am a retired firefighter and this just seemed a fitting lesson for my moment of carelessness. When we purchase our own lodge this coming spring, I think I will also buy a wood stove for heat!!!!:haha:

Spend your life fighting the beast and teaching others what to do and the moment you stop, you do what you've been talling people not to.

Fellow smoke eater from VA.

There have been a lot of posts about people burning up camps and clothes lately.
Did you remember your training . . . and Stop, Drop and Roll? :haha:

When you order that lodge be sure and specify that you want the fire-retardant canvas!!!!

Just glad you and family are okay....could have been bad!

Hey Guys

Yeah, all was cool and I have to say my first thought was to get out of the tent but my wife started beating on me, then she saw the flames and started beating on them too.

Would you believe I was the fire department's Public Education Officer for about 15 years? :what:

Spent a lot of my shift time teaching fire extinguishers, fire safety, Stop-Drop-Roll, CPR, first aid etc. Just glad my buddies were not here to see this episode!

I will ask for a double coating of Sunforager on our new lodge! :haha:

I have changed my screen name to reflect Stumpkillers thoughts. I'll try not to be a hot dog over it though. :haha:

Just watch out, man! With a name like that, somebody's liable to squirt mustard on ya and try ta stuff ya between their buns! :shocking:

I did the same thing to one of my heavy duty insulated camo coveralls. You shoulda' seen the looks on the other campers face when they saw me dragging my butt in the snow outside. (I still had on what was left of my coveralls during that performance).

Well I was the one with his capote, but man it was funny when I came over to the lodge and Frank goes "I just set my self on fire" . The fringes on that frock are just like kindling, starts real easy but then again how many of the fire-trappers had propane heaters in their lodges. A stove or a fire wouldn't have had this problem. But am I afraid it wasn't all that smokey, just pretty funny!

Nightwind, them coveralls are pretty tough to get out of too!

LEJ, I am sure that I said that at the very least!

Technutz, YOU had my capote? I thought somebody else had it. Oh well, makes no difference, I was plenty warm, especially being so close to the fire!
