Hi all,

I'm building my first kit - an Isaac Haines from TOTW. I took too much wood away where the base of the tang meets the breech area. There's maybe a millimeter on either side. The rest of the tang inlet rather well.

Is there some sort of glass bedding that I could use to fix this? Is it even something to worry about aside from cosmetic issues? I'm building in .54 and I want to make sure it can handle the recoil. Thanks! :hatsoff:

I would recommend Acra-Glas. Just follow the directions and read them a couple of times before you start mixing the stuff. No problems in that instance.
I glas all the breeches on my rifles unless told not to by the customer. It makes a big difference in protecting the stock at the breech from any moisture getting in there and rotting the wood out. It is worth the investment of time IMHO. The wood that you have already removed is what they recommend for a good bond. I would do it if it were my build.

I bed all mt tangs I like to use MIRCO-BED
2 part epoxy just remember to use a release agent on the metal part,I like a good paste wax and I only let it set-up for about 4 hours before I remove the tang and then reinstall and let it sit for 24 hours.

we always glass bed the tang and the lock on the muskets and rifles for match shooting.

Windsor,
If you are referring to where the breech of the barrel rests against the wood than just move the barrel back a millimeter.
If you are talking about a gap that runs along the side of the tang than just glue in a sliver of wood.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions, much appreciated.

Chris - yes, it is along the sides of the tang. I was thinking about gluing in some wood, but didn't know if glass bedding would be easier/stronger.

that's what i did on my build....but i did mine so i can bed it and make sure it was strong in that area after inletting the lock area it looked like a little to much wood was gone :v .............bob
