I now own two renegades in .50 cal, considering purchasing a GM barrel in 1:70 twist specifically for round balls in a .54 caliber

Anybody own one of these barrels in the 1:70 twist and how do they fair with roundballs
How do they drop in any issues

I have one, and drop-in is no sweat as I move it between 4 different rifles. Just a non-issue for me, but I read on hear about guys who have all sorts of problems. Luck of the draw went for me I guess.

As for accuracy, mine is one of about a dozen GM barrels in the neighborhood, and every single one of them had a tendency to cut patches when new. The issue appears to be a poorly cut crown. Easy to fix with sandpaper and your thumb, or you can tough it out and keep shooting till the sharp edge wears back a bit. In either case, accuracy is stellar once the crown quits cutting your patches.

I have five of the GM replacement barrels, three on Renegades and two on TC Hawkens. Every one of them needed about 1/8" cut or filed off of the rear of the under rib before they would drop in the stock - and easy fix. But after that they all fit fine. As Brown Bear mentioned, they all had sharp crowns and loading was eased with a touch of 600 grit emory paper on the crown. A few dozen strokes down the bore with a tight patch and JB Bore will ease loading and quicken the break-in process too. As far as accuracy, no worries there. Every one of mine is a tack driver.

Here's a 50 yard target from my .58 caliber.

And a 75 yard target from my .54 caliber.

Where can you purchase the .54 drop in GM barrel for T/C .50 Hawken? Went to GM's site and it said see dealer? Midway had a .50 cal 1:70 drop in, but I want the .54!

Here you go.

If you're looking for the 5/16" version it looks like they're accepting orders at the moment. In recent months they've been pretty quick at filling. I'd click the Notify Me button, and they'll email you as soon as they're in stock. In the meantime you can can keep looking.

Me? Typo? :rotf:

Obviously I was referring to a 15/16" barrel rather than a 5/16". Thought I'd beat the peepers to that one. :blah:

I have that barrel for my T/C Hawken. Dropped right in. It was a tack driver right out of the box with .535 ball, ticking patch, and 90 grains Goex 2F.

Check out Pecatonica River, they have GM drop in barrels for Renegrade rifles, 1" across the flats, 45, 50, 54, and 58cal in the 1 in 70 inch twist. These are 32" long barrels. They also have them in 15/16" for the hawken but only up to 54 cal. Anyway I got one for my Hawken and it dropped right in no problems, good shooter too. OH and cost is $200.00.

My GM 1/60 barrel shoots groups about half the size of the original Lyman barrel.

I own two of these 50 cal GM barrels, one in 1/60 for PRB, the other in 1/28 for REAL bullets. Both are superb barrels.

When running a cleaning patch down either bores, I can feel how smooth the GM bore is compared to the original Italian barrels.

Not known to me comparison for the Lee REAL barrel, but it also shots similar group sizes to the PRB version.

For me, the Lee REAL bullet w/70 grs 2Fg is an "ouch" when shooting.

Just reading the post and noticed you said 15/16". Renegades are 1".

Doh!!!!!!

I've got both, so I get cornfoozed. I have the 62 smooth and 58 and 54 rifle in 1" and their 15/16" 54 cal along with the original TC barrels. Have to read the labels any more to know which barrel is on which gun! :hmm:

Huckleberry, if you're upgrading your Renegade, why not go for .58?

Midway has 'em, 209.00,,,unless I got the last one last week.

I have one of the .58s on a big bore TC Hawken stock. It's a wonderful barrel that brings a smile to my face every time I shoot it. Dropped a doe with it last year, but had to track her for six feet.

I heartily agree. I went from a factory 54 to the 32" GM 58. The difference in recoil is virtually nonexistant and the difference in accuracy is amazing.

I just bought one yesterday from the Log Cabin Shop in Lodi Ohio. I took my Renegade in to their shop and they fitted the new barrel to my rifle. The early Renegades had a slightly different tang I was told, and the rib needed to be trimmed back slightly. Anyway, on the way home, I stopped by the range to try it out. I was getting 3 shot groups at 50 yards (from a bench) that were all touching. .495 ball with .015 Ox Yoke lubed patch 65 grains of Pyrodex RS. I am impressed with the GM barrel. They had one left in 50 cal as of 9/26/11 if your interested
