Recently there has been discussion on GM barrels and helicoil.

What is a helicoil?

Thanks

In short,
a heliciol is a metel insert for damaged threads.
you drill out bad threads to oversize, tap with special tap that comes with the helicoil, insert helicoil, use it!.
The heli coil is essentially a oneway threaded insert of some pretty toughstuff. they have Been in the auto industry for along time and are proven for that application.

Might be OK for a stripped out small screw application in a business machine like a copier, printer, etc...but IMO, not in an application like for vent liner and nipple seats right in front of my face.

It's a cheap bandaide to fix a breechplug...corrosion will immediately begin doing it's work and I wouldn't trust one as far as I could throw the rifle...my .02 cents.

I hear you, Roundball. I don't want a helicoil on my nipple , either.

But let's not trash the Helicoil. The subject at hand is not helicoil's fault.

Helicoils are stainless steel inserts used to repair threads.

I have installed them in lots of different places with great results.

Normally, because the helicoil is harder than the surrounding metal, a properly installed helicoil is BETTER than the original hole.

In some aplications the engineers will specify helicoils in the original design to take advantage of this strength.

And therin lies the rub...

While I havn't personally inspected the prints for a Green Mountain barrel, I'm quite sure that there's no helicoil to be seen there.

Because of that fact, we're not talking about a trick design that offers me advantages of strength.

Nope... we're talking about paying full boat for a repaired barrel.

And I don't think that's right.

Thanks to all for the information and picture.

The picture really helps in understanding how it works.
