I wouldn't think it is big enough for them to make only rocket propellants if they did indeed buy it. They will have to make powder for other uses in order to maximize return on their investment.
 
Is model rocketry that big a hobby?
Yes, it is. Take a look at high powered rocketry videos on u tube, some of the rockets built are amazing and use very advanced electronics for recovery systems, tracking, telemetry and such. I was watching a hi-powered meet just a few months ago, and one rocket went to over 10,000’ and severel others getting around a mile. I also saw a few cans of Goex in the “pit” areas, as it it used as the charge to deploy the recovery system. Hobbyists have to be certified by testing and demonstration to purchase engines over a certain power level.
I have too many interests.....
 
My Brother was a Big Estes rocket tinker. The best story is when he and his buddy decided to put a payload of gasoline on top of a rocket, envisioning a big fireball in the sky! The rocket took off (top heavy) arced over and wedged itself under a shingle on the neighbor's garage roof and burst into flames. Police might have been involved in that one.
 
As destructive buggers we discovered you could replace the parachute with black powder to make the Estes rockets more entertaining. Just use the booster engines instead of the ones with a bursting charge and it would light off real well. Later after learning to make flash powder they were even more impressive.
 
I just looked it up, and a standard A, B, or C size model rocket engine should fit down the bore, but you probably need a few grains of loose powder in there first to get reliable ignition. Now go forth, try it, and report back.
Hummmm. Modify the touch hole to thread in an igniter (12 volt electric) and solve the percussion cap dilemma .
 
Ok, I've been doing some digging around the internet. Rumor has it Estes Rockets had purchased Goex. I have found nothing on the internet, just like the rest of you.
But..... Estes Rockets (Estes Industries) launched a new division in June 2021, called Estes Energetics. It going to supply REAL rocket parts to customers. I went to the new website for this company and of course I found nothing.
But.......... Go to there career page. There are two jobs listed , both controllers. One is in Colorado and the other is in Louisiana, where in LA???? Minden! Home of Goex!

Hmmm , I wonder. would a 1/2 A size engine (dia .51 inches) work like a gyrojet?
The Gyrojet is a cartridge which at first blush looks looked much like a .45 caliber pistol round. A Gyrojet is one piece though – unlike the bullet/shell combination of a standard round. Looks are where the similarities end. Conventional bullets are propelled down the barrel of a gun by an explosion. Gyrojets are powered by onboard rocket fuel.
A miniball glued to a 1/2 probably wouldn't make it 10 yards downrange and I'm not sure you would ever live down the embarrassment if someone actually saw you trying.

Hey now, I watch that show every week. I'm watching it right now. They have more proof that a scrap of leather was a shoe from an explorer pre-1492 than this thread does for Goex being sold.
Yeah, me too. Since episode #1.
If a spokesman for Estes doesn't know about it yet, I wouldn't hold my breath.
