Forgive a stupid question from a beginner but what is Goex? I have tried Triple 7 in my flintlocks and found it to hang fire every time. I assumed black powder was the only hope but would love to have something else if it works?

Goex is the name of a powder company, formerly owned by DuPont Corporation, that is located now in Lousianna, and is the only USA source of Black Powder. Your Triple 7 was NEVER designed nor intended to be used in a flintlock! It should tell you that news right on the container! Its flashpoint is some 300 degree HOTTER than that of Black Powder.

If you will go to the Member Resources section of the Index, and scroll down to "Links" and click on it, you will find a list of powder suppliers. Click on Goex, and you will see a map of the US with information on all the distributors, and an 800 number for the main company. Most of the distributors have 800 numbers, too. Call the nearest distibutor, to find out where the nearest retailer is for Black Powder.

If you want to save real money, buy your powder in quantity. Go together with other shooters . Powder Inc, Graf& sons, and several other distributors and retailers will discount sales of from 5-50 lbs. There is a $20.00 per shipment Hax Mat fee that is assessed for every order shipped, so the cheapest way to buy the powder is by ordering the largest quantity they will deliver to your door. A case is 25 lbs. You can mix and match the powders you order, also. The most they can legally deliver to you in one shipment is 2 cases( 50 lbs.) By ordering by the case, the price is at $14.00 and less per lb. I don't know what you paid for the Triple 7, but several members have reported paying more than $25.00 per lb.

Goex sells different grades of black powder, and is also selling its own " substitute" powder. The general rule is that pistols and small caliber( up to .50 ) rifles use FFFg powder. Anything larger, and shotguns use FFg powder. FFFFg powder is for priming flintlocks only. Fg is cannon powder, and for very large gauge shotguns. They also sell a
Cartridge grade BP that is between FFg and FFFg powder.

The Substitute powder, Pinnacle, was intended to be used in Cowboy Action Shooting, straight wall pistol cartridges to produce light loads for that game. It needs a hot flame from either a MAGNUM percussion cap, or a standard large pistol primer to ignite the powder properly. It is not designed for use in Flintlocks, " UNLESS A BOOSTER CHARGE OF BLACK POWDER " is used.

Flinters need black powder...the substitutes have a much higher ignition temperature and the relatively weak flame from the pan flash is not strong / reliable enough to ignite the BP subs.

Goex is an outstanding black powder...I happen to buy it by the case, specifying 1 can of 4F and 24 cans of 3F...using 4F for priming and 3F for the main...100% immediate ignition all the time.
A number of people also get satisfaction just using the same 3F for priming the pan.

Goex is the brand name of the only USA-made Black Powder being sold today. The ones that you mention are black powder substitutes. Depending on where you live real Black Powder can be hard to find due to local zoning laws, as Black Powder is classified as an explosive while the substitutes fall into the same category of propellents as smokeless powder. Most of us who use Black Powder, be it Goex or one of the other brands (Swiss, Kik, Wano, etc.) usually buy it mail order from one of the distributors. Google Goex & you'll find their website, which will give you a list of their distributors. I personally buy my powder from PowderInc, they have good prices (freight included in price) & will sell in lots as small as 5lbs, however the price gets better if you buy more. I usually buy a case (25lbs) at a time for the best price.....you might see if any of your friends want to split a case with you.

If you buy a case from Track, they don't charge the Haz-Mat fee. You can mix granulations and even brand within an order. Delivery is by UPS right to your door.

My last order was $11.85 a pound delivered to the front door. Gota luv Powderinc.
