Started using gojo (plain no pumice) for cleaning works great. Heard it will do well as a patch lube too. Anyone else try this?

Never gave it a thought but I use it to clean my hands and it takes off just about anything. Wife uses it on spots on clothes. It would have clean the barrel everytime you shoot. Would be like bore butter without the smell of butter. :hmm:

Searching for "gojo" produced 12 threads. Here's one.

Regular gojo contains proplyean glycol and mineral spirits...don't know if that does much to remove and neutralize BP left overs.

Sounds real interesting :hmm: . If spit works, why not gojo? Ever look at your hands after a day at the range? The first thing I have to do is clean up. I think I'm going to have to try it. Thanks for the idea  .

I've been usin gojo and T/C bore butter, 50/50 mix,, for bout 6 months now, I like it, When I used just gojo, it seemed to dry out a lil too fast for me,,,,

I wouldnt put anti-freeze in it.
I forget what its called but one chemical in anti-freeze when its burned will flat out kill you.
I dont know how much it takes but I dont want to find out.
Remember years ago in Bopal India all thos epeople were killed by a gas leak from a chemical factory?
Thats the gas that leaked out of the factory.

I'm a big fan of Murphey's oil soap. I use murphey mixed with windesheild solvent {the kind that you'd buy in the north that has a certain alcohol content} it seems to work very well for me

I've used Murphy's for years on all kinds of things..Then I mentioned about using Murphy's on my firearms to a fella who has a few more years shooting experience than me.
I was told it contains a host of ingredients that can harm my barrel, and mess up the coatings on my glasses*. Hint hint for those of you with anti-glare coatings

So I did some looking around:

Potassium soap of vegetable oil
CAS Registry Number: 061788-65-6
Synonyms: Fatty acids, vegetable-oil, potassium salts; mixed vegetable fatty acids, potassium salt; Vegetable oil fatty acids, potassium salt

Materials To Avoid: ALUMINUM, BRASS, BRONZE, AND STRONG OXIDIZING AGENTS
POTASSIUM SOAP OF VEGETABLE OIL
Ingredient: PROPYLENE GLYCOL

So looking at it like this, any soap manufactured contains some form of lye.
Then I read a few rants about how Murphy's has screwed up hardwood floors.

Then taking into account the mixing together of compounds... the lack of solubility of potash in alcohol...then add water and some more propylene glycol. :nono:
Glycol in heating and cooling systems and your vehicle can turn acid...grow slimers and cause a host of other problems.

I see fellas using rendered animal fats for lubes...hummm if any blood is present and even the fat its self could contain salts that can harm a barrel.
I've gone to cleaning with just a drop of dish soap to remove grease and oils, about a gallon of hot water, hot water rinse followed by WD-40 or alcohol and a CRC douche.
Wipe-wipe-wipe
Let barrel stand muzzle down, check awhile later one quick oiled patch and a dry one and I'm ready to store her.

I feel if you use a small amount of soap, rinsed well with clear hot water and a good modern lubricant your chances of ruining a barrel are slim.
That mixing of compounds is not a good idea...no where on the instruction lable of Murphy's does it say to mix with glycol and alcohol or peroxide (oxidizers)

We've beat this topic to death on this forum. Since I've quit playing scientist with cleaning compounds I have more time to shoot and have had less fouling problems. :hmm:
